Will dreadlocks ruin my life

Thinking about growing my hair out so I can quit looking average and boring. I'm in corporate America too, so I'm worried if this will get me fired or destroy my career?

It will limit you in Corporate America as a black man in the same way shoulder length hair will limit you as a white man.

I'd advise against it.
I don't know why America has this stupid stigma that "clean cut and clean shaven" makes you more professional. But its there.

I wouldn't do it. Try some other things out that will not make you look average and boring.

Do you have your ears pierced? You could wear small stud earrings for work and bigger ones outside work.

If you don't have tattoos, you could get some. But, get them for yourself not to get girls...

Also, try a more edger clothing style out.

Unfortunately, dreadlocks hurt a black man career wise. Low cut hair or bald head only. Keep the facial hair neatly trimmed or eliminated altogether. Unless you're in with a pro-black, black owned business, it will hamper your progress.

LOL @ being cucked by your job. i could never work in a corporate atmosphere ever again. even the REAL companies and major players of the world have figured it out, ie google and apple and virgin etc. their work places are dynamic...its not about what you look like its about what you can produce.


most corp jobs are a waste of peoples time, really how much work are people doing...lol making spreadsheets and sending emails. get the fuk outta here with that. 80% of the day on FB and youtube. whats the point of being there..wasting your most precious asset....TIME.

sorry for the rant on corp america and most wage slave jobs that are useless in reality. I guess my point is do something where you can be free to do whatever you want...if you wan to grow your hair then grow it fuk what anyone says.

28. 5 years experience in the corporate world.

Currently working in the finance and strategy arm of one of the world's biggest media conglomerates.

I have short dreads and an earing. Hasn't caused any issues in the 7 months I've been here. Bit more of a relaxed atmosphere as its media. Smart casual to work for Senior Managers. Most other people turn up in casual. See a lot of people in trainers. Fair few guys with hipster beards.

Started my career in the UK equivalent of Wall Street. Much more straight laced.

Depends on where in your career you are. The greater your achievements, the more you can get away with. Also heavily dependent on how often you deal with clients. The more quickly you need to make a lasting first impression, the more presentable you need to be. Now I don't deal with clients face to face too often so my work speaks for itself.

By the way, if your hair is clean cut now it will take at least 6 months for it to be long enough to dread.

I have worked in conservative corporate America for years. If you want to advance up the ladder then I'd advise against dreadlocks. They want you to fit in, not stand out. You won't be taken as seriously with dreadlocks.....trust me I've heard this before.

I understand that corporate America is racist, but regardless of if I'm clean cut or not, I'm still black which doesn't change a single thing.

I wouldn't say it would ruin your life, but depending on what you do for a living it might cause a problem. Ultimately, the choice is up to you. I might hate dreadlocks and somebody else they are the best thing ever. You do you and you will be fine.

It matters though. Being a black man is not as big of a disadvantage in corporate America as it used to be. In fact, the converse can be true as most large companies are desperate for diversity. A clean cut black man is ideal, just beware of all the traps (trashy women and jealous people waiting for you to slip up).
