Got a new sales job..

I got a new sales job working at a call center beginning September 19. The base salary is mediocre, but the commission can be very solid. I know this because I've worked for two competitor companies. One month I took in $2,300, another $2,100 and I never applied myself 100% to these jobs.

The job is at a call center at an inbound sales (no telemarketing). It was a difficult barrier for entry, 3 interviews that spanned almost a month. When describing the salaries they said their top sales reps are making $4,000 a month, and the above average ones are making $2,000 a month. Don't believe the 4k, but I believe the elites are probably making close to 3k. I know companies lie about these commission sales salaries, but this is a Fortune 100 company you're probably a customer of, not your run of the mill craigslist scam.

For the first 3 months of training they front you $1,533 a month in commission before you start selling, and from there it's on you. My goal is to take in $2250 a month from them (this puts me at a nice round salary with base pay) with 3k as a stretch goal. I could really be putting some cash away at that pace.

Can anyone in sales help with some tips for confidence, staying motivated, techniques? It's been a while since I had to apply myself at work...

I did door to door sales when I went travelling for a year. I was nervous at first but then it became a lot easier. The more people I spoke to the more I become comfortable.

Best tip I can give - don't take rejection personally. I would frequently get told 'no' for 3/4 hours in a row. If you take that rejection to the next door/ customer you will get rejected by default. It can easily break your spirit. You have to be tough and mentally strong. This comes with experience. The rewards come good economically and socially. Good luck!

Hey I'm pretty elite at sales. It's the same game when dealing with shorties. It's all about volume. The more leads you put in your funnel the more results that will trickle in the bottom. Easy math. I've done sales for a couple of years before I started working independently so if there is one thing I know its sales.

The strategy you use is based on how you get your leads.

If you are constrained to inbound calls, that means you've got to maximize every call.

If that's the case, (depending on what you're selling), the general rule is to simply elicit the customers' needs as much as possible, and be as flexible and creative as you can in matching what you've got to what they want. Always while keeping strong rapport. Use your customers' words and phrases whenever possible, to describe your own products.

As far as confidence, whenever you're talking to a customer about your product, see whatever visualization you can come up with and actually imagine that you are describing a product, to the customer, so they're looking at the product and not you. This will help minimize any "if they reject the product they are rejecting me" feelings.

But the more work you do on eliciting their wants/needs/desires/ the easier it will be.

I sold Kirby vacuum cleaners when I was 19. They told us the typical customer said 'no' seven times before they said yes.

  1. in sales as well and some good tips I use to stay motivated is understand that the environment is no pain no gain. you want to make a lot of money, you gotta prospect. Cold call, follow-up, go to networking events, ask for the sale, etc.
Motivation is for the majority, an internal issue. Anyone would be hard pressed to teach someone how to motivate themselves if they internally aren't motivated. What I do tell myself is, if it's getting tough, that's when I need to put in more effort. If management is coming down on me, it's because i'm not doing what is expected and probably because someone is coming down on them. It's always a domino effect.

Always set expectations with agenda, the purpose of meeting/call, budget/pricing, etc. The worst is when the client tells you they have a 4k budget, and you come back and pitch them 8k, and they feel like you haven't listened at all. What I learned recently was, although i always set the right expectation, and even got the sale....I would shortselling myself. clients would tell me they have a 4k budget, and I come back with 3-5k proposal and they more often than not, buy. When I should not only clarify budget, but also let them know I'm coming back for the perfect scenario for them that I think would fit their needs. It will most likely be over the budget but they can always pare back and choose what they want. I've had some co workers who client says 3k, they go in with 5k and close it without questions.

And like AJ said, it's largely about volume. You need to have a lot of qualified chicks in your pipeline before you can close them. If you're putting all your eggs in a handful of baskets, you not only set yourself up for failure, but you're missing out on alot of opportunity for a big sale.
