Social media is not an entity or a being, it's a tool. Just as cellphones faced the backlash when they came out years ago you're all experiencing the same with Social Media. You'll get over it, it's here to stay. And when you finally do come to terms, you'll realize that, when used correctly, just how lucrative, entertaining, and beneficial it can be.
Social Media is what the user makes of it. Social media does not 'control our youth' or 'burn your time' . YOU/THEY the user, actively allow these things to happen. The popular belief is if you use social media you must be posting constantly or you're compromising your privacy however when used RESPONSIBLY these are not realistic concerns.
And the number one unwritten rule to casual social media use is to not have it tied to your personal/professional ID and to have your accounts set to private. The guy who used is real name on twitter was really silly. You haven't been following the feminists/SJWs? They live for the opportunity to ruin a man's ability to put food on the table. Soon, the feminists' power to censor those who disagree will cease but we our still fighting that fight. For now it's better to be on the safe side. I'm glad you didn't lose your job, but I bet you probably feel really silly in the workplace now.
Also, it is true that whatever you put out there is there... forever, however, there are ways to prevent employers and others (excluding major figures of power) from finding it. If you express very controvesial opinions on Facebook there is way to ensure strangers CAN'T see or find it. And most social media site utilize such privacy features. The problem is, rather than taking a little responsibility and actually navigating the priivacy settings, people just chalk up there social media experience to being some sort of privacy breach. When that's only the case is YOU ALLOW IT.
I'll make a thread on the beneifts of Social Meida one of these days.
