Hey it's me wuzzle again I was wondering what you guys thoughts were on bjj I'm thinking of starting it soon I'm smaller but stocky. That's why I'm interested in learning it any thoughts

I did BJJ religiously for 3 years. 3 hours a day. I moved 2 hours North and there aren't any quality dojos around here and that is the sole reason I don't do it anymore.

Get ready to be tapped out in under 10 seconds by some random 130 pound guy/girl EVERY single time you roll with that specific person, it is not like stand-up where you can land a lucky strike. If someone is better than you, you will get destroyed every single time. It's a very humbling experience and you will realize how little size/strength matters and how important patience, technique and confidence pays off very quickly.

It's amazing, give it a try.

Are your ears guaranteed to get f'd up over time? I'd hate to get in the practice and be forced to get surgery on my ears to remove growths due to my hobby.

I've seen lots of guys with colley flower ears. They're girls are usually hot.

I have cauliflower ear on my left ear from BJJ. You can wear different types of headgear that specifically prevents it, or try and get it drained immediately after noticing it. My left ear is now asymmetrical (aka. sticks out a lot further than my right) and it noticeable as I wear short hair. I don't really give two sh*ts though, it doesn't bother me.

Nobody will care if you wear headgear either, people know cauliflower ear sucks.

The real thing you need to watch out for is ringworm (I've had it several times, also preventable). Now that sucks.

I'd rather avoid cauliflower ear. But the description that a trained 130lb woman will destroy a "strong" but untrained 230lbs male really makes it sound interesting.

That's not likely. Technique only goes so far. An untrained 230lb guy will still overpower the BJJ trained 130lb woman especially if the guy has any kind of grappling experience. She could be a purple belt and him a white. I would bet on the 230lb wrestler muscling out of submissions. You can get some wrestling head gear to help prevent cauliflower ear.

The other thing you should consider is how clean the gym is. There lots of viruses and skin infections you can get from a gym that is not cleaned often and properly.

So skill in this endeavor will give you advantage in real world when there is grappling or close quarters involved.
I think it's probably the most useful martial art there is for self defense. The only issue with boxing is that without handwraps a hard, technical punch can cause damage to the hand and wrist.

I agree. A boxer trains to throw hard, so in a fight they do REALLY damage when they punch without gloves. But they train with gloves, so you hit to the face. Hitting the face and head without gloves actually hurts your hands more than you hurt the punched.

If you want to punch, which is an important part as a street fight, then study Tae Kwon Do, it really is the only Asian Art that teaches you to punch properly, and you train without gloves.... your hands get REALLY tough, you can always tell a TKD training black belt because they have calluses on their knuckles. TKD teaches you to never use hands to the face unless you are breaking someone's nose of gouging eyes. All hits to the head are actually to the neck. All hits to the head are kicks. The focus is learning how to kick, hands are secondary and used only on soft tissue strikes.

I will say that their are TKD dojos that only teach WTF style TKD, meaning they train with pads, gloves, and helmets. It is safer and but doesn't really help you, but is good exercise. If you plan to participate in tournaments then you MUST study WTF, because they teach you stuff (like axe kicks) that are good for competition points but practically useless in a real fight.

If you want to learn TKD that will help you with self defense, then you MUST find a Jhoon Rhee style TKD studio.

Took Judo back when I was a teenager... I quit because my ears were getting jacked up. Started TKD and never looked back. I will however say that TKD is a young man's art, the older I get the harder it is to be REALLY good at it, since there is a lot of kicking, in hindsight a better form for lifetime enjoyment is Aikido. I've seen 70 year Aikido masters that are still good.

Cauliflower ear is largely genetic; some people just don't get it. I never did.

BJJ is great. I trained for about 3-4 years. It's street usefulness is largely defensive. BJJ kicks in when you are losing a fight, and keeps things from going from bad to worse. Anyone can tackle you from behind and sit on you. BJJ is the skill to get away, where an untrained guy is pinned down and takes a beating.

I liked most of the white belt experience. I don't really like bjj tournaments and competitions. Everyone just flops on their back and pulls guard, which doesn't even work in mma, much less a real fight on concrete.

Most mma fighters train a grappling art and a striking art. Kickboxing or Muay Thai is a popular striking art choice.
