A few sources I've looked at list fruits as simple carbs. Makes sense...fruit sugars blah blah blah...

However, the glycemic index shows them with a low glycemic index score...and from what I understood, that means more of a complex carb effect (less spike in the glucose levels)

Whats the deal with fruits?

the more fibrous, the lower the glycemic index. make sure you look at both the GI and the insulin index. some fruits are better than others, fruit juice is nearly always trouble.

Different fruits have different GIs, and they range from low GI to high GI. Some low GI fruits are apples, peaches and oranges. IIRC, cherries are among the lowest. As intermediate you get bananas and raisins, and on the other end of the scale, you get honeydew watermelon as high GI.

Look up a GI scale on google if ya wanna know exactly how all the fruits are classified.

Throttle is completely right....esp about the juice part. juice takes out nearly all the fibre out of fruit, and leaves you with a horrible sugary high GI mess.
