I've always held the belief that religion is a tool to control the masses. If you notice, the leaders of most civilizations that have religion seem to be impervious to said religion. They kill and do whatever they damn well please, then use that religion to keep their people in line. Its pretty clever, when you think about it.

Anyway, its all a crock of bullsh!t. I'm sure religion has done some good things, no one will argue that. But the blatant lies and mysteries kept by the church far outweigh any good that may have come about.

What you say is contradictory - all religions say "Do not be the AGGRESSOR/Kill" - yet their king tells them to kill in war and they do it? Then they are NOT a religious society!

Depends on where you're reading. If we're talking about the bible, Jehovah and his followers were about as blood-thirsty as they come.

Religion itself is contradictory. At least Christianity is. God loves you, yet he sends most of his people to hell? If God made people in his image, and yet we are imperfect, God must be imperfect, right? There are so many things just like this. Flip to any random page in the Bible and I bet I could find some contradictory statement.

You gotta remember: The Bible was written by man. Not just man as in humans, but MEN, as well. Men, in a time when males were in charge, and women were little more than sex objects and home keepers. Why do you think God is referred to as "Him"?

This thread is going to end up as another religious debate, and it'll be closed before you know it. But at least I got a good laugh out of it. Thanks OP.

I'm pretty much in agreement with Ace of Flames.

Some NDE accounts like Howard Storm's almost had me thinking otherwise until I realized that most of the NDE accounts lack uniformity and have all kinds of crazy sh!t going on in them in keeping with being simply a dying brain hallucination.

People see Pook. "Look! He is athletic. He enjoys talking about sports. Therefore, he is a jock."

Pook then talks philosophy. "Look at that! He must read books! Therefore, he is a nerd jock."

Pook then listens to the women. "Oh, he is so sweet! He is such a Nice Guy!"

I can accept that a few crazy people believe some of the things in the Bible. But I'm not sure I'll ever understand in my lifetime that a good majority of America actually believes everything that's in there! We like to claim to be the intellectually advanced country, but in this respect, it definitely doesn't show.

And now we get to another point: Christians are hypocrites. The Bible is the Word of God, right? As followers of God, you must follow his word; You can't pick and choose what you like and don't like. It doesn't work that way.

If you only like an assortment of Christian teachings, then why call yourself a Christian? Why not just be agnostic or something, and say that you like some of the things they talk about? That's what I do. I don't claim to be part of the group that I'm really NOT a part of.

Meh, I'm not so much a non-believer in God or Jesus as I am in organized religion.

You speak of right and wrong, .... morality, as if its a metaphysical concept.

Morality is nothing more than recognizing that some actions cause either harm on others, yourself or both, and that some actions help others, yourself or both. There is no mystery in this. This ability is stricty a function of intelligence and serves the function of preservation of a species.

If we lacked the ability to know that certain actions can harm our fellow man, we'd stand the potential to extinct ourselves out of pure ignorance. Survival of all species is paramount among all other goals for living things so yeah, of course, we're going to have the genetics to prevent that. And there's not one thing metaphysical about it.

I think its pretty arrogant when you have a christain, or a Muslim, or any religious sect claim that they have the market cornered on what actions constitutes morality. Any religion is pure optional and unnecessary when it comes to being "moral".
