The problem isn't divorse when the mother wasn't married to begin with, it's too much abstinence education when it doesn't work. Kids who learn abstinence is the only answer don't know enough about protection and pregnancy. The ones who do learn about protection are learning about it too late. Sex ed should be started at 5 years old. We need to stop with the puritan Christain dogma bullsh1t in this country.

Bro, women get a lot of cash for having kids. Don't listen to the bleeding hearts. I know some women that get a ton of government assistance as well as child support from the fathers.

If there wasn't a guaranteed financial benefit, there would be a LOT more abortions.

Here in Canada they also get free health care, tax breaks etc. Lots of freebies. Sorry to say but a lot of young single mothers get pregnant with the financial benefits in mind.

Very true, so was wyldfires response below this. Divorce is an unstoppable industry in this country.

I doubt money to truly be the motivating factor for young women to have children. It really isn't that large a chunk of change. Most SMs I know only have one kid and it was due to a lack of foresight, and the modern american pursuit of immediate gratification. They wised up after number one and wont have any more regardless of how much money is offered in tax breaks. That may be the impetus for a select minority of the SMs in this country but definetly not the majority of them.

Earned Income Credit isn't a tax credit for people who do not work. If you don't work you get maybe a couple hundred dollars. It's a sliding credit based on how much you earn up to a certain amount, when you no longer qualify. I file as Head of Household and get Earned Income Credit. I work full time and have 4 children I support. I get about the maximum amount. I do taxes for friends and relatives as well. I did the taxes of a single mother with two kids who worked for about a month and hardly had any wages. She only got about $300 in EIC.

About deductions...most people go the standardized deduction route because they get a higher deduction. I've never itemized.

If you're going to make the kind of claims that you are making you should have your facts straight, and you don't...makes you look rather foolish.

You're wrong. When I left my ex husband back in 1994 my kids were 7, 5 and 3. He was an abusive alcoholic and I ended up having to flee the state we lived in and relocate over 1500 miles away and start over. I left with 3 little kids, $50 in my pocket and what personal effects we could carry. I had no car. We went to a shelter and my father bought us train tickets and off we went.

Initially, I had to accept assistance from the state I went to. I had no choice. We needed a roof over our head and food. Although there are quite a few subsidized housing programs...they all have very long waiting lists...always at least a year, sometimes over 5 year waiting list. I found a two bedroom apartment that was a dump...but it was the only thing I could get because I didn't get enough cash assistance to get anything decent. I had to rent from a slum lord, basically. I had all of $50 after the rent was paid, which covered the electric bill. Forget cable, a phone or even toilet paper. I had to ask nearby family members to get us toilet paper, soap, shampoo and toothpaste.

Once we were settled in I was walking my ass 4 miles each way to work during the day...and thank goodness for headstart taking my youngest one so I didn't have to pay daycare costs. At night I babysat a neighbor's kids while they worked for extra money. It wasn't easy and hoofing it 4 miles in a foot or more of snow in the winter time because you can't afford a damn car is no fun.

Anyone who thinks women have babies with the intent of going on welfare so they can live high on the hog needs their damn head examined.

And regarding child support...the father is SUPPOSED to pay that...he made the kid too. A lot of the reason so many single mothers end up on assistance is BECAUSE the father doesn't support the kid/s he helped make.

Don't the parents of these girls teach them to get higher education first before having kids? I wonder what kind of parents are teaching kids nowadays. Picard...we aren't talking about immaculate conception here. Girls aren't the ones chasing after sex en masse...it's the guys that are doing that. The girls are naive and often are under the impression that if they have sex with a guy he will love her. Next thing you know...she's pregnant and he's gone. Sure, there are a few girls who try to have babies because they think it will keep a guy they are afraid of losing...but that's not how it happens most of the time. More often than not its a horny guy not wrapping it up and a naive girl thinking if she spreads her legs the guy will miraculously fall in love with her and stay with her forever. Unwanted pregnancy due to irresponsibility and foolishness and a naturally emotional being having to choose between risking raising that baby by themselves or murdering a baby...their baby. That's how come there are so many single mothers...because there are a lot of irresponsible idiots and even those who do stay together don't always hold it together for whatever reason. There's plenty of blame to go around to both the guys and the gals on this one, that's for damn sure.
