If its a genuine number then doing this makes you look kind of needy and unsure.

If its a fake then you don't gain anything. Its just unnecessarily awkward.

When you text a girl after a night out just saying "It's Ben" or whatever avoids the "Who is this" problem.

If its fake than she has no interest in you. You won't gain anything from "tricking" her into giving you her number. That's just weird. An interested girl will gladly give you her number.

You'll find out that things are only awkward if you make them awkward. I've done this plenty of times with guys and girls and its never been awkward.

And if its fake you do gain something. You know to next her immediately instead of getting a shocker later on. You know she straight up lied to your face and can next her then and there. As opposed to people like OP waiting a day or a week and then calling and being let down when they find out its a fake number.

You can just test at that moment if it is real or fake, if she lied and gave you a fake number you now know to next her immediately instead of calling the next day and finding out it was fake like the OP. Never mentioned anything about tricking anyone into giving anything.
