Great movie. I've been watching over and over for the past few months to figure out something but im still having trouble

Was madolyn madden pregnant with william costigans child or was she pregnant with sullivans?

Costigan. Implied it in their last meeting, she wanted to talk to him about something.

He backs away, and then turns to go.

(he turns)

She moves her head slightly, watches him go.​

You can say Costigan knew what she wanted to say, but rather not know it. You know the cliché ignorance is bliss?

In the original Chinese film (Infernal Affairs), Costigan's Chinese counterpart Chan had a kid too that he was not aware of. The screenwriter compressed three female characters from Infernal Affairs into the Departed. The therapist, wife and the mystery woman with Lau's kid were all seperate characters.

Think about it as though you were analyzing the film. Thematically, the whole point of Costigan meeting and sleeping with the girl was to knock her up. Since basically everyone dies in the story, there needed to be someone to pass on the "I'm a good person" genes. Of course, it did involve the girl cheating on Sullivan but he was lying about his entire life to her, was very distant to her, and thus thematically the cheating was justified. She was a basically good woman, doing public service, it would have been a disservice for Sullivan to have fathered the child, so there you go.
