Hey .. i was just curious to know how many hunters there are on this forum. IF so .. what do you shoot ... and have you actually put any lead through a game animal before? Whats your best kill?

I shoot a 30/06 .. and a 300win mag. My best large game animal was a 1200lb moose I shot in 2007 at about 300 yards .. right through the lungs! And my best deer was this year ..

My daughter and I went hunting this year (shes 14 and got her hunting licence) SHe got a shot off on a white tail doe (in BC in certain areas you can take a white tail doe if you dont find a buck) but missed it .. we spent 7 days hunting .. and on the last day (after tracking this deer on foot hiking all over the fricken mountain where ever the deer went all day for 4 days) I knocked down my biggest buck ever with my 14YO standing right behind me. Its was a 4x3 Mule Buck... looked almost like an elk for some reason (was brown in colour and not your typical mule deer grey and had NO tail). It was a Mule deer though .. as the antler configuration was Mule deer. WE had 2 doe tags too for mule deer on top of the buck tag in our party of 4. My daughter helped me pack it out .. and gut it .. and everything.

I tell her one day she will have to try and find a guy more manly than her .. as she shoots guns .. is almost a black belt in martial arts. DEF A force to be reckoned with haha!

yes, the 300 is a far better rd for the job than the 308, especially if it is sound suppressed and fired from a Browning autoloading rifle. I am mainly a pistol guy, I helped Jeff Cooper set up IPSC combat match rules. I've been an A class competitor since 1977. I'm also black belt, in MooDukKwan branch of Taekwando, since 1973. I mostly hunt with ccw pistols, I have more experience at what happens with flesh and blood impacts, with real "carry" pistols, than any man alive.

Your allowed to hunt with a pistol? Nice. Not here. What ya hunt with a pistol? The 300win mag i got has a muzzle break on the end of it to reduce the recoil. Man it packs a whomp. One of the deer i shot flipped right over when i hit it. Messed it up really bad inside too ... was a gut sack full of mush. haha Probably too much of a gun for deer. My old man blew the leg off a deer once with his 300win too .. they do so much dmg for a 30 cal.

I have a # of rifles and pistols. My favorite pistol is a Colt 1911 .45 Commander lightweight. My favorite rifle for all around hunting is a Remington 700 BDL in a .270 (Leupold Vari X 3, 4.5x14x40 scope).

My daughter wants me to get her a .270 .. something a little lighter than my safari 30/06 for her to carry around .. and still enough gun to get the job done.

p.s. when can i post more than 10 times in a day? I hate waiting for tomorrow to post after i get my 10 in. Flipping sucks.

I am an outlaw, I don't CARE what they say is legal to use on what. I also don't care what time of the year it is. I suffer so much of a handicap, from using REAL ccw sidearms to hunt that there is no reason to add the handicap of hunting when other are hunting, etc.

I only own a Benelli Nova Pump Tac. When I was a LEO we hunted down criminals and gun nuts with Smith & Wesson M&P .40 and Remington 870s shortened. In the military, I use Remingtons, Berettas, tomahawk cruise missiles, torpedos, .50 cal, M16, M4, etc...Get Some.

what's with the association of criminals and gun nuts, anyway?

Pennsylvania has an "atlatl" season for deer. It's basically a stick you use to chuck a spear. If you can kill a deer with that, I'm impressed. Bow hunting is not nearly as hard, but still I can appreciate it. I have a Hoyt compound bow, but I need to get the arrow rest fixed on it.

I have so many deer around me that killing one with a gun is a task that might have been challenging when I was about eight years old. I could shoot one from my back yard every day. (I realize it's not that way everywhere). Across the river from me in Kentucky, you can feed corn to deer in your yard all year long, and then when hunting season arrives, you just go out and blow them away. In Illinois, you have to plant the corn, let them eat it all summer, and then blow them away. The state loves hunters, because they pay to hunt, so they encourage overpopulation of deer. And if you're a farmer whose crops get eaten by the deer, that's just too bad for you. I have to prove $500 in crop damage to get one out-of-season nuisance permit. At that rate, even shooting them out of season would never help. There's a birth control shot for deer that's $30 per shot in a tranquilizer dart, but the government would never let me, because it would cut into their hunter money.

I know a buck would slice me up with its antlers, but I'm pretty sure I could kill at least a smaller doe bare-handed. The hard part is getting a hold on one. Hiding in a tree so I could jump on a deer's back and strangle it would be my idea of having fun at hunting. That's probably illegal, anyway. Early homo sapiens survived by hunting with every dirty trick their big brain could think up. In the rare event that they ate larger game like deer, if they did kill it themselves and not steal another predator's kill, it would be by doing something like driving the deer off a cliff or into a corral. They might have also set a snare, then caught the trapped animal and killed it by hand, probably by a rock to the head. All the fun ways of hunting are now illegal.

I became legal to shoot a rifle a few years back, but haven't had a decent chance to get out hunting, nor have I had the funds to buy a gun. I WANT to go out and kill my own food, but the demands from work just haven't allowed it.

google for IPSC and IDPA "combat' style shooting. Some of it is done with rifles, but most of it is pistol stuff. the IPSC "limited" and IDPA use gear that is a lot more practical to carry and have with you than the "space gear" that Unlimited IPSC "gamers" use. I personally want a wt and size factor of the gun, concealability of gear and actual ccw of gear to be factored into the score. It could be easily done, and would correct a lot of the bs seen out there.
