Why do so many people talk about white rice as if it's to be avoided? The Japanese's staple food is white rice and obsesity in Japan is almost unheard of and they have the longest life-expectency in the world.

I don't really get why you would choose white rice when other rices have more nutrients.

The japanese eat a lot of fish and vegetables. That sure is better than most people over here who consist on fast food, candy, and doritos. My korean friend at work i see eats white rice and vegetables with nearly every meal.

Hell we'd be quite healthier continuing to eat fast food, candy, and doritos if we cut that crap in half and put fish and vegetables in half of its place.

From an article on japanese diet that i looked at since you brought it up:
The Japanese do suffer from very high rates of stomach cancer, and relatively high rates of cancer of the pancreas, liver and esophagus, the so-called Asian types of cancer. There are many explanations for this trend, none of them proven. The most common theory is that the use of highly salted foods such as soy sauce and salted fish is the cause of stomach cancer. But other dietary components are equally suspect, including high levels of irritating talc present in white rice and carcinogens in modern processed soy sauce.
Oh maybe not so good ;)

I think it's more to do with oriental cooking have some sense of portion control rather than what kind of rice they eat

Plus they don't have Wendies or Taco Bells open late night to feed the midnight munchies.

and accordingly the japanese are now fighting obesity with the rest of it. if anything, asians & native americans (their closest cousins genetically) are MORE susceptible to getting fat in the presence of an overabundance of calories.
