Especially whey? I was looking online at GNC websites, there's one close to my house, and there's all different types. What type of whey is best? Whey isolate? Hydrolyzed? I guess they all have different properties, but which would be best for putting on lean muscle under the Mark Rippetoe begginer guide? (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=712752)

Also, I would like to lower my body fat percentage while putting on muscle. In another thread, someone suggested carb cycling. I've done some googling, but I'd like some details/opinions from you guys before I decide to implement that diet.

GNC is pretty expensive. If you do a websearch, there's tons of bodybuilding nutrition businesses that are better.

If you can afford it buy isolate over concentrate.

If you are in America by your stuff from: www.trueprotein.com
If you are in UK/Europe by from www.myprotein.co.uk

Although there may be a better option for mainland Europe, but I don't know it.

Rippetoe is a great routine for beginners, great choice. You should be eating like this : http://www.sosuave.net/forum/showthread.php?t=134782

This is an example of timed carb dieting. Carb cutoffs in the hours before sleep to deplete glycogen stores and keep body fat down. Works well for muscle building.

Good luck,

GNC can actually be the cheapest place to find supps, shakes, and bars if you go there at the right time. Whenever a product is going to expire in 2-3 months, they discount it heavily. If you have a gold card membership, you get 20% off of the already marked down price... for example, the day before last I went to a GNC near me and picked up 20 "Isopure" 40g protein drinks which sell for $4.50 each... for $0.99 each... then had 20% taken off of that for the gold card. All in all it came out to 40g of protein for $0.80 each... you'd be hard pressed to find that anywhere else. Of course, if you were paying full retail prices then I'd definitely advise staying away from GNC... after all, it does mean Get Nothing Cheap. :)

To the OP - you really need to do more research on your goals. While it is possible to cut AND bulk at the same time, it takes a huge amount of discipline and adherence to an ultra-strict meal plan and workout routine. A far easier idea would be to cut and then bulk followed by another cut cycle. I know you want results instantly, but bodybuilding rarely works like that. As I'm assuming you're not in any advanced stage of fitness I think you'll be ok with basic whey protein for post-workout nutrition as well as just throughout the day. Before you go to bed I'd eat some casein protein though, as it's digested slower than whey.
