When chicks joke about being bf/gf, is it an IOI?

I'm sure many of you can relate to such a situation or have seen it. I've had several female friends who would joke with me about us being a couple. We hang out a lot and are pretty close but not on a romantic level.

I pretty much interpreted that as being a sign that we're in the friend zone. But what do you guys think?

Does the fact that she's joking about it indicate that the prospect of a relationship is absurd? Or is it a subtle way of hinting that she's interested and wants to be something more than friends?

It depends on the context. But I think most of the time it isn't an IOI. That's just from my own personal experience.

I always thought that they would only joke about it if they truly didn't care about a relationship.

Yea I knew a girl who used to do this all the time and I found out she wasn't interested in that way at all..
