Ever since I got my job, I decided it would be a good idea to tithe 10% of my paychecks to charities. Something I have noticed is all the money that I've given out, I've received back, but in greater amounts!

My parents, who usually don't buy me things (hence the job), bought me several items that are worth well over the amount I had donated. I've been finding dollar bills on the ground on an almost daily basis. My paycheck at work says I worked WAY more hours than I thought I worked (didn't really pay attention). I feel happier and healthier than I ever have.

I've read some Biblical passage saying, "Give, and it will be given to you; good measure, crushed down, full and running over, they will give to you. For in the same measure as you give, it will be given to you again."

I was quite skeptical on this until I had actually done it! I read another article saying how giving money for a good cause puts you in a mindset of knowing that more money will come to you, that's why you're able to give. Notice guys like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have given generously. Hmmmm....

What I want to know is, do you guys know of any charities that actually handle the money properly so that most of it goes out to help people? Kids, people with disabilities, etc...? If you do, please post them here!

I strongly advise those of you with money coming in, to just give a little something once in a while! Most of us are so blessed financially (especially here in America), I believe the least we can do is share a little something to help others!

Most charities are pure BS. For every $10 you donate, something like $1 dollars gets there. The rest is used to pay salaries, accomodation etc for the people working at the charity.

Man.. That sucks to know.. I looked at the public financial records of the charity I donate to, and they only spend 8% of donations on the staff expenses, so I guess it also depends on the charity.

The passage you referred to is Luke 6:37.

"Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."

It bears a striking resemblance to Buddhist theology regarding karma.

btw, my favorite charity is Families Against Mandatory Minimums - http://www.famm.org/

Have you also experienced blessings from giving?

But how would you know if you had?

A more Zen question would be - can we even tell a blessing from a curse? A small curse is a blessing if it keeps you from a larger curse. But again, we never really know what events are related.

I did get a hand-written thank-you from the famm president when I joined about ten years ago. I was kind of impressed with that.

What this means is that your spirit will be uplifted, and not your wallet!! Giving paper and receiving paper is not the purpose! It is the inner well being you receive from helping others!
