alright. i'm in a two-year community college.

my goal is to get into medicine and become a doctor.

but i'm still new to the college lingo and the names of majors and concentrations or whatever.

okay, what is my major, given that i'm in a two year college planning on transferring to a four year college.

i asked my brother, and he said "associate of science with an emphasis of biology" and he explain it was because you can't technically be a pre-med major in a two year college.

and about 5 minutes ago, i googled "pre-med major", and what i understand, pre-med isn't a major...? it's many majors that classify as pre-med?

my main reason is so i can finally put it on my facebook... :p

oh, and if what i want to specialize in matters, i want to get into dermatology.

Call it whatever you want, you're your own PR guy here. Even if it is an associate of science, I don't see the harm in telling people you're pre-med. Anybody who tries to call you on it probably has way too much free time anyway.

your major is the name of the bachelor's degree you're working toward when you're in the 4 year college. and yeah premed is not a major, it's just another way of saying you're working toward getting into med school. and since med school only requires completion of the 4 basic science courses, you could be a math major or english major and still apply to med school

so what bachelor's degree are you trying to get?

btw, i'm not actually taking the actual classes yet... but i'm taking the gen-ed classes... but that still means i have a major, right?

He could even be a music major and still apply for Medical school as long as he takes the pre-med (pre-requisite) courses.

Facebook? What about determine what pre-requisites you need to transfer to a 4-year degree University? And what do you need in order to go to medical school?

You are wasting your time.

once again latinoman, colorful attempt at trying to sound like a smart-ass. how's it working for you?

next time, use your common sense and understand what a smiley implies. oh right, you must've picked up on smiling isn't a DJ trait, huh? i'm so AFC.

oh, and main reason doesn't mean sole reason.

also considering i said i'm taking gen-ed classes, i wasn't too worried last night while i was messing with facebook about what classes i'll be taking the next few years. thanks for your insight though... you are wise beyond your years.

nice try. hope it works great for you next time. you know... that smart-ass attempt.

You are doing good being that you have selected your major. I'm in my 5th and last semester @ 2-year school.

My first semester I went to a counselor and told her to enroll me as a psych major. That has helped me get to where I am today in terms of my upcoming transfer because they directly admitted me as a psych major. No matter we still have to take gen-ed classes, and I have to go to my eng and spanish classes today, annoying cuz it feels like they'll never end.

Like your pre-med, being a psych major will get me into grad school for a related program, but I will not major in psy there. Hell, even psych majors can go to med-school.

Did you pay that ticket already or are you waiting for an invitation?

Why don't you do all the steps necessary to get into med school and not worry about what your major is called. You're not going to get to med school from a community college anyway. Just tackle the first hurdle. The finish your pre-med program. Then go to med school. The light is far down at the end of that tunnel, so just forget the semantics and study, persevere, and complete one task at a time.

I agree. I work for a repo company. But do I tell people I sit around all day and hunt people down on the computer. Nope, I'm in finances. If you don't take care of yours, I'm sending someone for your ride. :box:

yes it's paid for.

wrong thread though.

OH I GET IT! you're trying to make me feel bad and sensitive... because you think i'm sensitive about what you said in the last thread... about me getting a ticket? right?

:'( i'm just trying to find my way in life. my ego is shattered.

but how does it feel being 40 years old and attacking my threads that deal with my issues that deal with being young?

i've met many people bitter towards the younger crowd because they pretty much sucked in life.

is everything alright in your household? it's not good to be bitter of life and take your issues out on people through the internet. you'll live longer if you be positive. you can do it if you believe in yourself.

hang in there. i believe in you.

Yes, there's no such thing as a "Pre-med" major. Many pre-med students major in biology, microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, or physiology at a 4-year college. You can technically get in to Medical schools with other degrees, but a strong background in chemistry, biology, and math are advantageous. Most 4-year colleges have a specialized pre-med advising department that will help you fulfill your requirements.

I have a Masters Degree from a top 10 University in that particular program and I have a great career, live in my own house (which I own) and drive my own vehicles. And I get laid quite frequently too.

Hmmmm...Yeah, I am a bitter 40 year old man. Bitter toward younger people too, that might explain why I phuck women in their upper 20s. Literally. I phuck them, because I like to see those younger women phucked. Literally.

hang in there. i believe in you.
I wish I could say the same about you.

well OP, considering you are advertising yourself as a potential FUTURE BIG EARNER, go ahead and say you are pre med. people won't know it's not a major, so don't worry if it is or isn't.

Or you could juice it up a bit, find some esoteric way to say "biology" in preparation for medical school, like

applied epidermal protoplasmic variations

or something like that.

Or if you could look what other people put on their facebooks that sound good.

Michele, Pre-Med isn't a major. It's just a prerequisite you need to apply to medical school (which usually comes 4 yrs after your undergraduate studies).

But from a community college, you have to take the GE courses to transfer to undergrad (and get your BA or AA)....

and then apply for medical school (which is fairly difficult)

I am hoping to become a MD also. I know a lot of students want to be, and i know a lot of them are weeded out by a few very difficult prerequisite courses.

I am a senior in HS right now, and i hope to make it. (either that or the next american idol (not)

I was in an accelerated premed program before I decided to become an engineer. There are only 4 prereqs - General Chemistry, General Biology, Organic Chem, and English, that's it. 3 of them are GE's for most majors. Don't take these GE's at community college, take them at a 4 year

You wanna aim for a 3.6-3.7 minimum GPA and an MCAT score of at least 30 to be competitive, and even if you're competitive doesn't mean you'll be admitted on the first try. Clinical experience and extracurriculars to show your maturity level and dedication help a lot too.

Becoming a doctor is a hard road. With the amount of sacrifice before the payoff, you should look at it as more of a calling than anything else. Even after you get in, the first two years of Med School are brutal in the amount of information you need to absorb, and when you finally get to your residency, depending on your specialization, there's a good chance you're not gonna be sleeping a lot for another half a decade

But if you feel called to do medicine, it's one of the most unique and fulfilling careers out there
