Don't judge according to worldwide popularity......we all know the obvious answer. Think more in terms of fitness, conditioning, and overall manhood factor, required.

Rugby hands down.

You don't see full backs and forwards wearing 40lbs of pads like NFL players. It's just you and the ball.

NFL players wear 40lbs of gear because without it they'd die with the kinds of impacts they have. It's a retarded comparison that doesn't hold.

whats so different about rugby impacts? do they tackle people differently? take away the pads and you've got the same type of tackles don't you?

It's just not a good comparison.

I've heard that football players tackle poorly. Like if a football player goes and plays rugby it's common for him to dislocate his shoulder because you can't just lead in with a shoulder like that without pads.

Do football pads really weigh 40 lbs? Next you'll tell me hockey players are pu55ys because they wear pads. Nevermind the goalies used to not wear masks :)

Oh and the modern muay tai (spelling?) guys are pu55ys becaused they used to not wear boxing gloves?

I've broken so many bones when i used to play rugby as a kid.

I'm not really a rugby fan but its a hella manly sport, especially compared to american football when you spend most of your time standing round lookin' tough.

I think the average ex-NFL player dies in his 50's. There has also started to be a trend of guys retiring with serious brain damage that gets a lot worse later on after they retire. Does this happen with Rugby?

Also, there have been at least a few documented deaths in American football? Do guys ever die playing Rugby? I don't follow the sport, so these are all honest questions, not rhetorical.

Its not a fair comparison because your average american football player is bigger, stronger, and faster than your average rugby player.

Completely different games.

NFL players, many with world class speed, are getting 40 yard running starts before hitting opposing players blindside.

Without pads, there wouldn't be enough bodies left to play a full game.

Of course, I don't expect those outside the US to understand.

No. Not at all.

Again, completely different sport, different circumstances. Different collisions.

6'3", 250 lb. LB's that run a 4.5 40 getting a 20 yard running start and blindsiding a ball carrier.

I've played both in High School, and can tell you it's two entirely different games and the contact in Football is a harder and more violent due to the inherent nature of the game.

It's not a question of who is tougher, as players in both sports are tougher, but the nature of the NFL requires protection, otherwise you would have on-field deaths on a weekly basis.

Paralysis and career-ending injuries occur, the latter more so than the former, even with all the protective gear.

This has been debated many times here, with no resolution.

You base this on what? Experience playing football?

Yes? No?

If not, you're spewing ignorance.

I've done american soccer training but never played a competitive game no. So im not spewing ignorance, plus in rugby there's virtually no rest because you don't run 2 yrds then take a nap.

And people have died and been paralysed etc playing rugby albeit at the lower levels so obviously your never going to hear about it.

This is the equivalent of the looks thread.

And finally OMG i just defended rugby!
