That's why you and me couldn't work in a relationship. I see would tend to ramble on about things.

"It's OK if you don't want to tell me. I... understand."

Then switch to another topic and grab hold of it as if you've totally forgotten what she was talking about. Keep smiling in the meantime, appear as if nothing's wrong. Watch what happens. If she tries to get back to the topic and tell a little more, she's actually trying to please you now and carefully tests the waters to see if she can convince you to listen anyway. Because she thinks she insulted you with that "long story" remark. If no such thing happens, you know what time it is.

Don't offer to listen. Don't. Ever. Do That.

Not unless she's your girlfriend, or unless you want to be hers.

Say; Oh

Then, ask about something else.

+1. Don't make a big deal out of it if you truly want to know the story. She'll tell you once you don't want to know anymore. By not questioning or jumping to conclusions, you are doing what 99.9% of guys don't do - thus, setting you apart from the croud and making her think: "Wow, he remains so calm and relaxed when I don't tell him things."

You become the prize in some sense.
