Probably the only topic I will make asking for advice but I feel it's important ----

Where does one begin if they are an absolutely terrible dancer? I have honestly NEVER danced in my life....and I know I have missed out on opportunities/it has cost me. Admittedly the problem is I have always felt self conscious about it. Well the urge has come upon me and I know I need to gain this skill but I'm not sure what styles to exactly study. I don't think I've ever seen a dancing school that taught "club dancing". Your suggestions will be appreciated.

You are correct that most places don’t teach a club/freestyle dance.

For years, friends (and women) would tell me I suck at dancing, am “too stiff,” etc. But none of them could offer any meaningful feedback because they weren’t dance teachers. So I completely gave up on club/freestyle and forgot about it for a few years.

Later I ended up talking formal ballroom dance classes (for about five years) as a social activity and confidence booster. (Obviously that is partner dancing and involves very different music.)

However, at informal work parties, singles dances, and bars/lounges/clubs, I suddenly I had to be able to do some freestyle. Then I just took off. My “freestyle dance game” came together very quickly. Now I freestyle pretty well and feel very confident at it.

It was very “wax on, wax off” because the ballroom classes taught me rhythm, timing, cool turns to use, etc.

That being said, I agree with El Payaso. I think salsa would be even better for your purposes. You’d gain more flexibility, rhythm etc.

Appreciate bro's. I will definitely look into a dancing school around here and take some lessons in these different styles. The dancing thing has been a big handicap for me - I have probably missed out on who knows how many opportunities b/c i've avoided it.

Salsa is simple to learn and fun. It teaches you rhythm and more importantly it teaches you how to lead from a masculine frame.

It will also teach you movement through your hips.

You can enjoy dancing socially even with a limited reportoire so long as you learn to lead what you can do well.

For club moves get in front of a mirror and dance by yourself. Nobody will see you and you can learn to relax and get comfortable moving your body. There are videos you can get on You Tube that get played on the video screens in clubs & lounges that feature dancers and EDM. If you watch these and look at how they move you can pick up things like foot work & rhythm that you can then practice in front of a mirror to music.

If you feel ridiculous doing it alone where nobody can see you, you'll feel 100x more self conscious doing it out somewhere. Get over the awkwardness alone and you'll be amazed how much better you do in public.

I think one of the most masculine ballroom dances is Tango.

8 count basic which is slow, slow, quick, quick, slow.

Study the guy's posture on YouTube videos. He leads like a champ.

P.S. If you're serious about this, get some ballroom dancing shoes. The way you move across the floor looks more graceful and classy with prose.
