Well guys, here's my very first article that I submit to the Don Juan forum for all to see. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it.
Every now and then I sit back and think about which icons of society most accurately personify the coveted Don Juan status. Several movies come to mind, but there is one that sticks out in my mind: National Lampoon’s Van Wilder. The protagonist, Van Wilder (duh), is one of the best examples of a successful man, not just with the ladies but also in all areas of life. After seeing the movie for the first time, I found myself thinking, “What would Van Wilder do?” Since I have watched this movie literally 50 times, I have picked up on his better traits and realized that he is a great example of a Don Juan.
If you’ve ever seen the movie you’d know that although Van Wilder is a party liaison on the outside, he is also a very deep and complex character. This holds true for all true Don Juans. They have character, substance, and charisma. The attractive exterior pulls people in, and the deep character hooks them and puts them in the bag. He has goals in life, albeit goals of just having fun in college, but goals nonetheless. He is active in his school’s extracurricular activities, making himself known around campus. He has a lot of social proof, and as we know this is gold when it comes to dealing with other people.
His strategy for attracting women is also very powerful. When he meets the other main character of the movie, Gwen, he does not immediately spill his feelings to her as an AFC would. In fact, he is so busy with his own life he makes a date with her on the spot for later that night, barely giving her time to acknowledge it. He has a life, and makes sure she knows it. Never does he actually tell her that he thinks she’s hot or smart or a great person, he keeps her on edge. Forget that she has a boyfriend; Van goes straight for the prize. He is also patient in his endeavor, because if he got restless he knew he’d never win the prize. The whole movie takes part over a few weeks, perhaps a month at most. During this time he is extremely interested in her, but never ceases to spend time with other significant women in his life. When he does finally get to spend time with Gwen, he makes it extremely enjoyable and interesting. There’s never a dull moment because he is always funny with just a hint of ****iness thrown in for spice. It works like a charm.
Van has many friends at his school. Not only does he hang out with every conceivable group at the school, he is the alpha male in all of them. All the sports teams look up to him, all the greatest parties are thrown by him, and the entire staff at school knows him. He is known and respected by all for being the man. He does something that is also very important as well; he never fails to help out the less fortunate. He goes out of his way to aid and make good relations with everyone, as evidenced by the party he threw for the Lambda Omega Mega.
In short, Van Wilder is the best example of a Don Juan I’ve ever seen in a Hollywood movie. He does so many things right that most people would never comment on. He is wise, intelligent, ambitious, charming, amiable, and above all a great person. Women want him and men want to be him. I think if everyone took on his best traits they would be more successful in all areas of life. If you ever get the chance, watch this movie many many times for its wisdom. Then whenever in a pinch, ask yourself, “What would Van Wilder do?”
