My social situation has been improving since the beginning of this school year, before I was known as a computer geek/nerd who is really shy around people. Now I'm more respected the "popular" people, cuz I'm good at sports and I get 90s in school without studying and I have a sense of humour. So now I got all these people that greet me in the halls and want to talk to me before/after school and during classes.

I have a problem with conversations, I don't think I'm a bad converstionist, it's just that I can't make small talks.

For example, when I talk to people in class we usually have rather long intellectual discussions. However this does not make me appear to be nerdy because my topics of discussion often spark interest in those who overhear. For example, sometimes earlier this week, I was having a debate with a fellow classmate about topics including history, morality and freedom. My math teacher got interested in my arguments that he stopped doing his marking and listened to our conversations, and my classmates were pretty impressed as well. And then one day my math teacher finished 10 minutes early and he asked me to "share information" the class during the time.

Now you can see that I can definitely talk and keep the interest of an audience there's just one problem. When people ask me in the halls, something like "Hey, What's up" or "How are you doing?" or "How's life?" or when something comes to your table and says "Studying for a test?", I usually fail to answer smoothly. I would usually just say "not much", but it would be rather awkward to be silent for the rest of the 3-5 minutes. I don't want to share too much of my personal life like *****ing about other people, and for trivial questions such as these.

Any advice from people on how to overcome this problem would be appreciated.

Usually when I'm asked this question I respond with the funniest story I can think of that happened that day at school. Like if I learned that I have to take my Calc AP test in a tent (true) or that my math teacher shouted someone's score out that got like a 60% because the student asked him to in a joking manner (but the teacher wasn't) or the time I almost killed a goose golfing.

"What's up?"
"Not a lot, what's new and exciting with you buddy?"
or
"funny story"
or
"You see that book"
"Yeah"
"I have to study 2 chapters before tomorrow because I partied all week :D"

x.

Continue convo.
It's that easy, and if you want to say what's up, go nuts.

Easy way to kill 2 to 15 minutes depending on topics.

I usually just say something to extent of "Life's good, how about you?" and then just talk about whatever comes to mind. One of the worst things you can say is "not much" not only because it makes you look boring but it is THE generic response that everyone says.

I just usually give a brief synapsis of what is actually up.

Here is what I would say right now: "I just started working now, got accepted onto the National Team for the FCCLA, some chick at a bar just handed me her number and said 'lets hang out sometime' and I got a girlfriend, and I am very happy with it all. So hows your life going?"

Usually for most that will get them to ask questions and then you can move on from there. Just make sure that what you say is fun, important, and interesting.

Working now is fun because I have my own odd job business. Getting accepted onto a National Team for the FCCLA is awesome and exciting for anyone. Anyone who is male wants to know everything on that story. And it shows that I am happy. Then I ask them whats up which usually isn't that exciting and they are like oh lets find out more about what he is up to.

that like "what should I say when a woman calls me hot?"

"Thanks, I think so too"

People on this site overthink things and that is where they get their problems at.

Not really, most of us do know what to say and the key is to be C+F.

Most of the ones posted are funny if not a lil ****y so i think we're doing a top job.

But personally i think the way to go with a girl when she says "How r u?" is to reply by saying "Fine, now that you're here", and then tell her how you really feel. (with a smile.)

Smiles always work, trust me.

No, not most of you. I say that because a LOT of people butcher C&F, or use it improperly, or even worse, at the wrong times.

There's a big big big difference between using C&F because you know how, and using it to create a desired effect 9 times out of 10.

Yeh agreed Docs,

But most people at least have some grasp on the concept of being c+f but most tend to come of rude i think.

but I mean that's why we're here right, to correct the wrongs into rights.
