What should you look for in a good whey powder?

Alright, I been out shopping today, was looking to get some more whey powder, and had difficulty comparing the quality of one sort to another.
I've previously bought based on 1. Price
2. grams of protein per 100g

Yet the bloke on the market stall, when I asked him which one he'd most recommend, showed me this 2.5 kilo tub, £26, 40g of protein per 100g. I was like 'that's a pretty low protein content', (the one I have been using [normal strawberry one from Holland and Barrett] is 75g protein per 100g), he didn't seem to have much of a reason why his was better, so I told him I'd get back to him.

Is there anything you should look for in a whey powder, other than protein content? I have heard summat before about some absorbing into your system quicker than others.
And if so, what exactly should i be looking for?

I'm bulking btw.

isolate protein is a good thing to look for. the more isolate the better hte grade of protein. less carbs, you want a good ration of protein to everything else. little or not fat in the protein.

i dont know what they have in england for protein, i know the selection is a bit different in stores so i dont know if i could help you out. a really popular brand is ON, not my fav choice but it seems to have taken the market.

Thanks for the reply

Thought I'd share this link with you:

Its a real easy way to compare the nutritional content and price of different whey powders. I'm prob gonna get the Reflex Instant Whey, looks to be the best one there is value for money, I've found a company selling 5lb (2.25kg) of it for £30.79, plus only a couple of quid postage in the UK.

Whey protein isolate (WPI) is a fast acting protein. Your best bet is to get a blend of WPI and Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC) which is slower acting. A blend of WPI and WPC ensures you get fast acting protein post-workout, but also that the WPC keeps the supply of amino acids to the muscle going for longer, avoiding the catabolic effect that can result from WPI alone.

Thanks for that, i just looked up that isolate and concentrate stuff, it wasn't summat i'd known about before.
Bought some Reflex Instant Whey off ebay btw - its got both the isolate and concentrate in it, has got a high % of protein and is fairly well priced (£29.99 for 5lb with free postage).

or you can try this....

http://www.alexander-essentials.com/nutrisport-90-plus.php3

i've just bought myself a 5kg tub of this, i've been using it for a long time and have put on some decent muscle using it, think silverwex says he uses this aswell so i'm sure he'll approve of it!

90g of protein per 100g and also contains muscular casein which i believe is the best protein you can take before bedtime!

Hey, thanks for those suggestions.

I have just bought a 5lb tub though, so won't be getting any more for a little while.

But when I do, I'll have a good look at the ones you suggested.

a 5kg tub should last about 1 1/2 months...if you use morning, noon and night like myself!!..

it's an expensive business having a cracking body ;)

Haha, I know. You must be taking about 100g a day then.

I'm only taking in 44g a day at the mo (2 scoops, each 22g), so my tub should last about the same time.

How beneficial do you reckon it is to take it first thing in morning and last thing at night?
At the moment, I have my 2 scoops straight after training on days when i workout, and probably late afternoon/early evening on rest days. But I'm considering changing it.

Two best times you can take protein is immediately PWO, and before bed.

well i usually dont have a protein shake PWO, i usually open a can of tuna and have that with a pint of milk (skimmed!!), that gives me usually about 50-60g of protein (as much as your body can process in 1 hour i understand) and keep protein shakes strictly for morning, 2pm and before bedtime!!

plus i heavily recommend taking protein shakes with water...it will taste slightly bad at first (you get used to it) but it takes off all fat content!!

before i started taking protein shakes 3 times a day i was 156 pounds (6 months ago)....i'm now 173!!

Tuna takes too long for the body to break down, so its protein content is not absorbed into the body when the body is at its most receptive - within 20 mins of finishing training. Hence the importance of a pre-digested WPI powder.

would it be healthy to take 4 shakes a day then??, the only extra drink being on a workout day obviously which will be twice a week or is this far too much protein shakes for the body?
