what is medical school?

Ever had the time to decide....what u want to be when u grow up...?i know i know...just like many of You Ive never gotten interested in my future all this time ive had to overcome great odds....just like some of You guys?

Im in my third year of high school and decided to take the risk in to being a heard alot about medical school Im in high school and I want to be a psychiatrist...but since a psychiatrist is the person that deals with the prescription for mental illness...depression and other disorders


what is medical school and what does it take to get in there...from some of the things ive read theres alot of competion in order to qualify....I want to be a psychiatrist and I need to know what it takes...I dont want to get a surprise

About half a lifetime of college and residency, and good grades the entire time. After high school you would major in a science, like bio or chem, or some colleges have specific pre-med majors. You will have to study more than other majors. Then you study for the mcat, the entrance exam. With a high gpa and high mcat, you might get in. Psychiatrists have to finish med school and a residency, which might be in an environment like an ER where you would never work as a psychiatrist. Then after all of that is over, I think they go back and study more psychiatry?

You might consider community college right after hs graduation. It tends to be easier to get good grades, they count the same, and it's much cheaper. There's no reason to go 40 grand in debt for the first two years of school, especially when you will be in school so long. There are young doctors with student loan bills well into six figures.

If you want to get into a top med school you need to graduate from a great undergrad pre-med program with a perfect gpa and great letters. You can get into a state school with less but competition is still harsh.

Very few of the people that I graduated hs with who wanted to be doctors actually went on to become doctors.
