I'm going to have to do the dreaded cardio pretty soon, so I need help deciding on which choice between the two might have the most minimal effects in terms of muscle loss.

Re:

Wow, that's interesting. And I always thought jogging on the street (pavements, to be specific) would cause you to lose more muscle than the elliptical, since jogging is known to make people skinny and lean. Either way, I think I'll stick with the "fat burn" option on the elliptical because the weights are right nearby, so I can immediately lift after that...whereas I don't have that option in my neighborhood.

I believe Effort meant for you to do the elliptical, not that it burned more muscle.

If you are losing muscle while trying to lose fat you simply don't know how to diet. You should be gaining strength throughout your dieting, if not lean mass also (depending on how aggressive your diet is).

running on the streets is hard on the knees, so I prefer bike or elliptical.

I love the elliptical. My feet seem to be really sensitive so running makes them hurt easily. I'm sure I have decent running shoes and I'm wearing insoles and they still get sore. Plus I get blisters or something because I loose skin on the bottom of my big toes when I jog.

So anyways I do the elliptical for about 25 min three times a week.

These questions are so silly.
Eat right and lift right and don't sweat losing mass from cardio.

Re:

I ask these questions out of genuine curiosity, TeflonMcGee. Not trying to be silly here at all. As far as cardio goes, whether you're doing the elliptical or running on the street, aren't you bound to sweat and at least lose some muscle mass either way? It's hard in my opinion to avoid ending up sweating when you do cardio in general.

are you being intentionally obtuse? he meant stop worrying, not stop (literally) sweating.

moderate quantities of cardio do not eat muscle, and sweating certainly doesn't either.
