I had to read Civilization and its Discontents by Sigmund Freud for a class in college. (Ok, so really I just skimmed the first half of it). One of Freud's main points is that in the transition from primitive man to civilized man, we have suppressed our natural instincts, particularly our sexuality. (Though I think we are becoming more and more liberal about sexuality. i.e. Elvis's hip wiggling being considered obscene compared to Michael Jackson's crotch grabbing and Janet Jackson's nipple exposure).
This is somewhat similar to the Beat poetry movement in that both Freud and the Beats don't like how we project an idealized view of our society to each other.
This got me thinking about why most guys have the completely wrong idea about women. Before I started serious attempts to go out with girls, they really appeared to be something other than people. (They didn't seem "real"). From the image I was given by my parents, TV, etc. it seemed like sex was something women "give" to men, and that they didn't truly feel sexual attraction toward men on their own - they only felt it toward a guy they'd been dating.

Do you guys agree or disagree that we are fed the image of the AFC (at least in western societies)? I've heard that in Europe people are more open about sexuality than here in the USA (nudity on billboards, more topless beaches, etc.). Anyone from Europe want to comment on this?
Do you think that when you have kids you are going to make a concious effort to prevent them from becoming AFC's?

However, he was suggesting that TV shows are made to appeal to the AFC because the AFC is, well, the average guy. What I'm suggesting is that AFC's are projecting what they wish romantic interactions with women were like, and those of us who don't know any better take this as being fairly close to reality.i think tv is part of the cause of that this site even exists...
