weird first date

Howdy.

Ok so I met this girl today for a first date/ meet each other/ thingie. I originally met her online. She's 22, with a child. I found this out over conversing on the phone. I have no problem with it whatsoever. Originally she wanted to meet up without her daughter present, and rightly so. But, she ended up bringing her. I knew this beforehand and was cool with it. I brought my english bulldog along because i had no one to keep him. She was aware of this also.

FFWD to the date. --We first had some lunch and things were going pretty good. I could tell however that she would be preoccupied with the little girl for most of the outing right then I had to initiate 90% of the conversation.---I travelled a good way to meet with her in her town. We didn't really know what to do so I suggested we all just walk around and window shop. So we did and people everywhere were going ga ga over my dog. She made a comment(do you ever take him in public?) or something like that. It seemed like it aggravated her just a little. Anyhoo we ended up doing that and going back to our cars. (definately not the funnest date in my life) ---However she did say we should get together W/O the kids sometime.....so I guess there is hope.----It just seemed weird

First dates can be awkward no matter what happens. If you like her - call her up again.

Where in the date was the fun, the humor, the teasing, etc? And bringing a child along on a first date, what was SHE thinking? What kind of responsible mother does that on the FIRST date?

Anyway that last point is minor, what is MAJOR is I sensed zero enthusiasm on your part to be on the date, let me guess was this a serious toned date with too much about past history and not enough about superficial fun topics, like jokes, current events, humor related to current events, teasing, etc?

The date doesn't sound bad in the sense that it is over, but it sounds like better wait until date two sans child before evaluating the date one way or another.

Yes there were attempts at the common light topics like current events, etc... She just never seemed to bite or seem enthused to talk about much. I can only do so much when it comes to initiating conversation and keeping it going. I feel like I had to carry the conversation for the most part. Maybe it was because the little girl was there. Who knows......I might wait a while before i call her.....she didn't seem to interested on the date....so why rush?

she could have been having a bad/stressful day and she could have been worn out.it couldnt hurt to give her a call.she gave a reference to doing it without kids sometime,a plus sign.

IMHO you completely ignored a lot about preparing for a date;

- you knew that she was bringing her child ?
insist that at least first date be without kids !
you can do that over the phone in a nice way
telling her that you think you both would have more time to get to know eachother if the date consists of 2 adults only ( no children, dogs, cats, friends, family members etc etc )

- "We didn't really know what to do"
listen; u da man and you are supposed to arrange a date and prepare a date ( and that does not mean just bringing enough condoms, huh ! )

you need to set some ground rules for your dates

i would not next her ( yet ), but I would make sure that I was in control over the date

and for Pete's sake; dont bring your dog; its not a competition about who is best to spoil the date
