I'm clueless about the web and networking so I could really use some help here.

Basically, I have a website with my Internet provider. I have bought a domain name (but no webspace) and would like it to automatically forward people to my existing website.

I.e. when someone reaches www."mydomain".com, I want them to arrive at my index.htm page over at www."myexistingsite".com.

Where do I start? I mean, if a domain name has no webspace with it, how do you use it?

Thanks.

let me make sure I understand you. you already have a running website and you have another domain you want to point in that direction as well?

all you have to do is login into your domain register and forward that domain to the URL you want it to go to..s houdln't take 30 seconds

Okay, here is what you do.

You have to go into your Control Panel where you bought your domain name, and then edit your "DNS Settings."

Once under the "DNS Settings," you will have to change your "Name Servers" to redirect to your hosting.

For the name of your name servers, you have to go into your Control Panel for your hosting. For example, I have my hosting with Hostgator. I actually recommend them over GoDaddy and many other sites because they're alot cheaper and reliable.

Anyway, you can also call customer support and they will tell you the names of your Name Servers. There is usually 2 of them.

If you go on any WhoIs website, which is a directory that has contact details for websites, you would see that the name servers for my new site/forum, SoSuccessful.net, are listed at "NS561.HOSTGATOR.COM" and "NS562.HOSTGATOR.COM"

I actually bought the domain name from Netfirms, which sells domains with private listing for only $4.95! That's damn cheap if you ask me. GoDaddy gives you the same thing for close to $20!

Anyway, once you have that setup, you may have to add the domain name to your hosting control panel. In Hostgator this is called "Add On Domains" so that you can create a folder to add files to. It may be different with your hosting. You may want to call customer support to be sure.

Good luck and let me know if you want me to clarify anything. The little recommendations about hosting/domains are because I run 47 websites, and it feels so good to save money that I just had to recommend them. GoDaddy sucks, they just have good marketing, remember that.

By the way, you may want to make your website listing private, but that's optional.

yeah I guess I could have been a tad bit more descriptive

it's not hard. but ditto on the private listings.. unless you buy and sell domains than you want to make it public so people can get ahold of you

Thanks guys, I wasn't even sure if it was possible, which just shows how clueless I am. :)

I can't find the name servers, so I may need to contact my provider for that, but it seems clear what I need to do.

I do have another query in the meantime though. Is there any way (or HTML) code that will make one page automatically forward you to another page without clicking anything?

i.e. when you go to www.blueyonder.co.uk you are automatically jumped to http://www.virginmedia.com/

Thanks again.

Yes, there is.

Under your <meta> tags, insert this line:

<META HTTP-EQUIV="Refresh" CONTENT="0;URL=http://">

"0" is the time in seconds that it will take for the website to be redirected.

http:// is where you put the destination web address. This <meta> tag is inserted after <title> and before </head>.

For example, let's say you have a website called "alkjalkdjfkds.com" and want to go to www.sosuccessful.net. Your HTML code for "alkjalkdjfkds.com" will look something like this...

<html>
<head>
<title>Website Title</title>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
<META name="keywords" content="keyword, keyword, keyword">
<META name="description" content="Website description">
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Refresh" CONTENT="0;URL=http://www.sosuccessful.net/">
</head>
<body>
...rest of your website contents
</body>
</html>
Hope that helps.

attrACTION should be a teacher. When you say you run 47 websites what exactly do you do - and is this your job?

don't waste your time on meta keywords... google gives them no weight anymore. the new "in algothrim" is the description... it's more prudent to basically make your description tag your old keyword tag and your old title your new description tag

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.

You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.

let me see your site.. what is it?

when I had my computer company we had a nice sized marketing budget, but we also got alot of free traffic

before that, I had 5, count em 5 video game backup sites while in high school... if you bought a video game backup online, it was a decent chance I was the person you got it from. and didn't spend a cent on marketing and got about 200 people a day to each site, which for a site that niche, is GREAT

I always wished I'd cashed in on the back up game market. I saw guys raking in a fortune at carboot sales and markets. I was always too scared of getting caught, althought those who did get caught got away with a caution back in the day.

My site is: www.devotion-graphics.com

At the moment it's just a free tutorial, but it gets a lot of hits. I'm hoping to expand to include e-book tutorials and maybe commissioned portraits. It's also a means to advertise some upcoming projects. I'm not looking to become rich from it, but would like to have a few background web projects to make a bit of pocket money.

lol, i was in high school and in all seriousness I probably was making more money than my dad. Kept nice clothes, cash at all times. I remember back then timberlands were in style.. I had EVERY color. At least 9 pair. I went to school with 2 backpacks, one with music and games and one with books. I got called to the prinipals office one day so the principal (who I knew well, his son was on the basketball team) because he wanted some dvd's. About 150 dollars a day.. I had 3 cd burner machines and 2 pc's just for burning. including around town and that wasn't including my job as a tech. I don't know how I found time to get any ass.

only thing about it, and the reason you had to have so many sites, is because Microsoft would shut one down every 2 months.. power in numbers my friend.

anywho, content is the name of the game. if you don't have any, which you don't have a hell of alot of, make some up. it all works backwards from there but you have to start with having revelant information on your site that is revelant to what the user is searching for.
