I've been working out my upper body now for a while now but my legs are still scrawny as hell. I also need to add some inches onto my waist so I can fit into my damn belt!

I'm really keen to do squats but I'm tentative because I've heard about the danger, pain and the nausea. I'm also pretty light - about 122 pounds. My dad has had knee problems so I suppose that is another concern.

Can any experienced guys offer me any advice for starting out on squats?

Start with just the bar so you learn how to do the movement. Dont put anything under your feet. Always keep your back straight, you can visualize yourself taking a seat, only theres nothing to sit on. Keep your eyes looking forward. Go down until your thighs are parallel to the ground.

Thanks ultrashogun, do I completely straighten my legs (lock knees) when returning to the standing position? And when squatting should my knees be pointing slightly o utwards?

Edit: Why the hell is "0utwar" censored?

Dont lock your knees, thats harmful. Ive read at many places that the knees are supposed to be pointing outw+rds(Why the f+ck is that censoured?) a little, but I have my knees pointing straight. Your highest priority however should be to keep you back straight or you get a prolapse in your lower back, also be sure to pull your shoulders back. Just do it alot in front of a mirror to learn it.
