What's up fellow don juans? I need the opinion of every single one of you guys.

I am moving into my fraternity's house in the fall, and I need your input on my room for next year. (Just so you guys know, my fraternity is nothing like Animal House. Our house parties are MUCH better ) The rules for what you can have in your room are, basically, anything goes. I can have alcohol, candles, incense, whatever. The house is really nice for a fraternity house, having been purpose-built for us in the 90's.

My question is: What can I do to my room to make it the ultimate zone for macking and hanging out? I want it to be a place people (especially girls) what to come to. One of the reasons I want it to be an great place is because on weekends we have absolutely INCREDIBLE house parties in the basement. We usually shut the parties down at 2:00am or when it gets too big, whichever comes first. When that happens, a lot of people go up upstairs to the rooms and continue the party :). How can I make my room to be the room?

If you have any ideas, questions, or comments at all, please post them!

Thanks guys!

this may sound gay, but having a game cube will probably make your place popular. I don't even play the things myself, but lots of people seem to.

I know what you mean. Here in the dorms those things are as addicting as crack.

Very simple - get a 40"+ widescreen LCD TV, game console and a hookah.

Those will function as your main "campfire" (passive activity) to draw people around.

The rest is just atmospheric and comfort like cushiony shyt, incense, candles, stereo, conversation pieces, coloring books, whatever...

My homeboy has a killer frat room, all the ladies like to come in there and hang out durning/after parties, it's a relaxing room. Here's what he has in it:

1.) A couch and a loveseat. Lots of room for people to hang out.
2.) Kegerator full of beer. College essential
3.) Freezer full of hard liquor and sort of a mini-bar of mixers set up (vermouth, grenadine, cranberry juice, etc)
4.) Cool posters and some framed art hanging on the wall. Really makes the room look classier.
5.) Giant flag of the school logo on one wall.
6.) Some table plants, including a bonzai tree (and no he's not asian)
7.) One of those zen rock gardens. Relaxing, and it's the second thing the girls in the room go for (after the liquor, silly tramps!)

I don't even think he has a TV in his room and I know he doesn't have any videogame consoles. If he wants to watch a DVD or whatever he plays it on his widescreen monitor off his computer.

Great idea! I will probably get a flatscreen tv, and I have a PS2, XBOX, and some old-school consoles. I hookah would be great, but we can't smoke in the house :(

Wrap around couch for one of the corners, attracts babes everytime. I'm going to come back to this thread. I think I'll be in the same situation as you next year. Not sure yet though... One thing though is that you need to keep your room very clean. Takes work.

My replies are in bold:

I have a futon and a incredibly soft leather couch.
2.) Kegerator full of beer. College essential
I wish! State law where I go to school prohibits kegs in frat houses :( My roommate and I are probably going to get a party ball and keep it hidden
3.) Freezer full of hard liquor and sort of a mini-bar of mixers set up (vermouth, grenadine, cranberry juice, etc)
This is one thing we will definitely have covered, because we both like to mix drinks
4.) Cool posters and some framed art hanging on the wall. Really makes the room look classier.
I agree
5.) Giant flag of the school logo on one wall.
I will probably put the letters of my frat on one of the walls
6.) Some table plants, including a bonzai tree (and no he's not asian)
7.) One of those zen rock gardens. Relaxing, and it's the second thing the girls in the room go for (after the liquor, silly tramps!)

Get a good sound system, music attracts people. If you spend around 200-300 bucks, buy old hifi stuff. It doesn't matter how old it is, there hasn't changed much in audio amplification. I got a top high-end yamaha stereo amplifier from the eighties plus two huge speakers from Kef from the same era. Sounds 10x better then the stuff you buy new for 300 bucks.

Lava lamps are also great for atmosphere.

I know what you mean, but I bought my stuff new recently. I have 5.1 for the TV and a great sound system for my computer. Sound-wise, I think I'm all set.

Come on guys, more ideas! I know you got 'em! :)

Keep some pics of hot ex-gf's, f-buddies and friends in an album to social proof and preselect you. Or here's a cheesy idea - what about a guestbook on your coffee table that girls can read, doodle and sign in? (Or if you're desperate, you can always fake in notes like, "Thanksss for the gooood time big daddy! Call me!")

If you have hobbies or passions, leave some of those props around as bait for you to showcase your skills. Musical equipment, arts, whatever...

And how about a blacklight?

Basically, it's like peacocking your room. The point being to DHV and give girls interesting points to open you with.

Oh and don't forget to deflate "Betty Blow-up" and hide your fleshlight before any chix come over... :D

As for the lava lamps, It may be cool, but isn't it a bit too retro and cheesy?

Wayword, I know people that have people sign their carpet or a sheet on the wall. I even know a guy that had people sign his car!

Lava Lamps
Lava lamps are awesome. To hell with the cheese, they gently light the room up like a candle, are totally relaxing and are able to pretty much hypnotise just about anyone :)

My frat doesn't have a house on campus. No frats do at my school. I feel like it would be an awesome experience though.

I want more details now! :) Sounds like you will be living the good life. I have it the same way, only perhaps better  The basement is like a club when we have parties, I kid you not, people wall to wall, blacklights, very selective entry, HUGE speakers, and so many bodies the walls become damp. It is absolutely INCREDIBLE.

So we have the same situation, but I have one advantage: My room is only a few floors above the club!:D

NO. They are cool and everyone likes them. They have a relaxing and hypnotizing effect on people. Plus they light the room gently. There is nothing wrong with retro. All good music is retro.

Get lights with a dimmer switch. Turning down the lights halfway can change the atmosphere a LOT.

Hang props on the walls, make it something special and origional. Skateboards for example, they sometimes have really cool art on the bottom. If you hang a bunch of them on your wall, it'll definitely get attention. Or electric guitars. When people see an electric guitar they will always find it cool even if they don't like rock music. You can buy an electric guitar for about 100 bucks and there are tons of choices. It will be a crappy guitar to play on and it will sound like crap if you plug it in, but generally the cheap ones look a lot like the real expensive ones ones.

That one costs 100 bucks and it looks WAY cooler on your wall then a painting or poster. There are guitars that cost over $3000 bucks and will sound and play awesome, but can you really tell the difference in coolness as a non-guitar player?

Paint one wall in a color and keep the rest white. A red wall creates a lot of warmth. A completely black wall can be really cool if you have a white desk in front of it. Avoid cold colors like blue. Orange creates warmth and brightness at the same time, plus it's retro cool.

Man, i wish i was in one of those frat homes. That's typically a USA thing though. Houses and rooms here cost a fortune. My friend pays €700 a month for a small, shytty room with a shared toilet and bathroom, in a very shytty neighborhood (i was there yesterday and almost got mugged). On a lot of aspects, college in the US is way cooler then in Europe.
