Frank Sinatra advised in the song Wives and Lovers: "Don't send him off, with your hair still in curlers. You may not see him again."

However, it seems that British women couldn't care less after a survey showed they are the least likely to put effort into their appearance for the sake of men.

They have the lowest levels of concern in the world for what husbands, boyfriends and other male observers might think, with only 51 per cent caring whether men liked their appearance, the study said.

Japanese women were second bottom with 53 per cent followed by Americans at 56 per cent.

Indian, Spanish and Korean women were far more worried about having a man's seal of approval, but it was Russia which topped the poll of 10,000 women, with 77 per cent saying that they cared what their men thought.

Janet Saunders, of Clinique, the cosmetics company which commissioned the study, said: "British women like to feel confident and beautiful for their own pleasure and take pride in their ******d appearance." Susan Quilliam, a relationship psychologist said: "It's a delicate balance. It's a positive thing in an equal relationship to reference the other person's tastes and preferences sometimes."

The survey also showed, that Britons are among the keenest on cosmetic surgery. Thirty five per cent of British women said they have gone, or are willing to go, under the knife for beauty.

Only Korean women were more likely to consider surgical enhancement, while just three per cent of Indian women condone it.

The survey also asked which of the 12 countries polled had the most beautiful women. Although most found their country's own women the best looking, Britons rated Italian and Indian women more beautiful than themselves.

All you need to do is to go down to some of the Costas in Spain and see how true this is.. the ugliest, worst dressed, fattest women are British. They make the Spanish women look like super models..

However on the other side, British women are also the sluttiest and put out the easiest.. so.. if you want a quick shag... you can't beat British!

It's a double edged sword. On the one hand, I have a lot more respect for a woman that can live for herself and not for somebody else's approval. On the other hand, I am less likely to be sexually attracted to her if she doesn't put some effort into her appearance.

This is so true.

I am always saying that if my girlfriend reaches this stage or stops caring what I think, then I will leave her and find someone who does. Why would I be with someone who A) I'm not attracted to and B) who doesn't care that much about me? Especially when I take pride in myself and many other women would love a chance with me. I'm not to be taken for granted.

However, I get such a grilling for that attitude. My female friends and even my AFC male friends accuse me of being shallow and a chauvinist and so on. Yet these same women claim they will never go out with a man who is shorter than them or is unemployed?!

I'm all for sexual equality, but that is not sexual equality, it's hypocrisy. I have a choice who I want to be with and I'm not going to settle with a fat slob for the sake of being politically correct.

Well if you're in Russia or India looks are important to a women. Ugly or fat women won't be married. Japan on the other hand focuses more on what the chick does... like cook and clean. If she sucks at cooking or cleaning she'll be single... US and British women don't have to worry about anything, so they place less value on appearance. Most women dress to impress other women anyways.

Agreed, and also I think that all women, by nature, care about what others think in regards to their looks. Some just have low self-esteem, insecure, mental dissorders, or just too damn lazy to put any effort into it.

That's where these "feel good" articles for women come from. It reinforces that mentality that a women thinks "I'm different" so it's ok to not be honest with myself.

All women care about how they look, bottom line.

Amen to that.

Never try to read a woman's mind. It is a scary place. Ignore her confusing signals and mixed messages. Assume she is interested in you and act accordingly.
