I heard someone say this to me. I jokingly said to this person " your such a dumbass". This person got mad and I told them i was only joking. They reply "there is always some truth to every joke"

I though about this for a while and this person is kind of a dumbass in my eyes. Im wondering about the truth to this statement though. "There is always some truth to every joke"

Why do we tell jokes like this? Is it to make everyone laugh or is it deeper than that? For instance, when i tell my girl "If you sit on the couch any longer, you will sink into it an never get up" When i say this im only joking but really its true in some way. She spends way too much time on the couch.

What if I'm getting personal with someone and he or she says jokingly "I dont know if i should tell you because you may run off and tell everyone and their mothers". Even though this person is joking is this person suggesting he/she doesent trust me?

Just something ive been thinking deeper about. Any thoughts?

My way of joking is to tell the truth. It's the funniest joke in the world.
George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950) English dramatist, critic
John Bull's Other Island," II

Be not affronted at a joke. If one throw salt at thee, thou wilt receive no harm, unless thou art raw.
Junius (1740 - 1818) English political author
In "Wisdom of the Ages at Your Fingertips," MCR software, 1995.

I've also heard that "there is truth in many a jest". Meaning that alot of jokes are based in truth.

I tell girls that I can't tell them something trivial (for instance, what I do for a living) because I don't know them well enough. It's 100% joking. There might be some truth in some jokes but by no means every single one.

a man and his friend, a giraffe walk into a bar. they drink long into the night. just as the bar man begins closing up the giraffe passes out on the floor.
the barman says to the man "you can't leave that lie'n there" the man replies "thats not a lion, its a giraffe"

-doesn't work so well in text..

but theres surely no truth in it.

Dont confuse the 2....

Normally these statements which you refer to as "jokes" are NOT jokes really, they are just a "nice" / "friendly" way of telling someone the "truth" that they might take as an insult if you say it bluntly to them.

Eg: Skel said:

Thats not a joke! Thats just telling the person that you dont trust them, in a nice way so that they will not get insulted.

Now compare THAT with:

a man and his friend, a giraffe walk into a bar. they drink long into the night. just as the bar man begins closing up the giraffe passes out on the floor..............
Now eventhough thats a rather weak+lame attempt at a joke ( ), THATS what a JOKE is.

There is a difference between telling the "insulting" truth to someone in a friendly way, and telling a PROPER joke which has no other meaning other than to make others laugh. ;)

I should have been more specific. I mean when you say something jokingly to a person as in not why did the turtle cross the road.
