Hi everyone

I'm about to turn 21 this summer, and have been trying to gather my friends to gotto vegas; it turns out everyone is broke, or not feeling it.

Instead of me being bummed out, I feel I should go anyways on my own. This would be my first time traveling outside the city alone, and although i've been to vegas once, this will be a new experience.

So i'm looking for any advice about traveling alone, and how people feel about vegas itself. I'm probably going in either July or August.

Advice, suggestions, comments will be greatly appreciated

Thanks so much

just do it. In my opinion you are better off by yourself willing to have fun and enjoy what you are doing than with people who dont want to be there. I'll be damned if you can find a better city to have fun in by yourself than vegas anyways.

I've got plenty of tips about vegas. I'm like the self apointed vegas spokesman on this site. Just give me a general feel for what you're thinking about doing and I'll help build on your ideas.

I plan on exploring, checking out sites, and of course gambling!!
I also want to hit up the good buffets around.

One question though, should I get a hotel on the strip? and is there anything interesting outside of the strip that I should think about checking out?

Lastly, is there such thing as "bad" areas in Vegas?

Thanks a lot

I travel alone all the time, infact I'm in Bratislava on my own right now and I've met loads of people, finnish, swedish, canadians, americans, british, icelandics. etc,

I'm hung over from two nights of partying!! sometimes i'm on my own and sometimes i'm with random people. it's great, you meet loads more people travelling alone. if you went with your friends you'd probably still meet a few people but 90% of your time would be with them. when you're on your own you can do anything, meet anyone, go anywhere the feeling of freedom is great.

plus you meet more people because you have too. it forces you out there kinda like doing a bootcamp.

I recomend staying in a youth hostel, not sure there is one in vegas tho I've always stayed in hotels there because they are so cheap.

Why vegas tho? don't you want to see some other places? LA has some good hostels, or how about mexico? there is a whole world out there for the same price as a vegas trip.

here I have found you a hostel in Vegas
http://www.usahostels.com/vegas/v-index.html

free bbq, pool comps, tours, Jacuzzi, swimming pool, vip tickets, foosball tables, all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast every morning, TV room with free DVDs, Limo tours of the Strip every Tuesday and Saturday night.

sounds bloody good to me! better than a hotel and you'll meet loads of international folk. maybe even some swedish babes in your room.

have a good one

As a first time visitor, I'd say sticking to the two main casino drags in vegas are your top priority. There's plenty to do in the new as well as the old casinos. More then any one person can see in a single visit to vegas. Come to think of it I've lived here for several years now and I haven't done everything there is to be done in just those sets of casinos, even less vegas as a whole. You should check out The Hard Rock, The Palms and The Rio if you get a chance too though. Those properties are pretty hype and they have a good nitch.

Most of the buffets are pretty good with a few exceptions. Typically the army of cheifs in those places don't skimp on the good stuff, quality all around.

A strip hotel isn't a bad idea if you have the cash flow. Strip casinos are typically very nice properties with lots of things to do inside of them and there's usually pretty girls walking about as well in most of them. If you don't have the ends then there are plenty of properties that are just off the strip, but be careful when selecting these as well becasue they are sometimes just as costly depending on the season.

Vegas has an underbelly just like any city in the country. Try to steer clear of North Las Vegas. It's one of the more dangerous areas in the city. I get around there no problem but I'm from baltimore so It's not very intimidating to me but still If I can avoid going there I will. Also the small strip of Las Vegas blvd just after the stratosphere between the new and old casino sets isn't the best area either. There are alot of hooker motels and generally shadier people there so unless you're looking for a different kind of excitement then don't go there.

Thank you so much PRmoon!

this trip for me is looking more and more exciting; i've been checking out travel websites such as orbitz, and the rates are around 200-300 for both air-faire and hotel. My friend also recommended me to check out costco.com for some deals which i'll check out later.

Another quick question though, is the "strip" in the new casino area or the old? how would I tell the difference?

Thanks

Hey Everyone

This thread has really given me confidence in making this happen, thanks a lot!

I'm down to picking the last bit of details; as for the youth hostel, I think i'd like to try a hotel route for now, before trying the hostel routine.

I'm looking at either the Sahara, or Excalibur because it'll cost me around $250 for roundtrip flight and hotel for 2 nights during august

What do people on the board recommend?

I'm leaning towards excalibur because its more closer to the other casino's around.

Thanks again!

Between those two I highly recommend the Excalibur. It's kind of a cheezy hotel with the whole mideval times thing but the Sahara isn't much better, although it does have a neat rollercoaster and a good steak house.

The main reason to stay at the excalibur is its because it's on the south side of the strip where alot of the big name casinos with lots of things to do are. it's right next to the Luxor, Mandalay bay, New York New York, MGM grand, Bellagio etc etc all of them are within walking distance of the Excalibur. The Sahara however is located at the northern most part of the strip and the only casino that's really close is the Stratosphere tower and it's not even all that. The Sahara is closer to the old las vegas strip but really you'll want to spend more of your time on the southside of the new strip anyway (that's where the action is).

NOTE: Stay away from the Excalibur buffet, it's horrible. Don't go to that stuipd tournament of kings dinner either, it's a serious waste of money. Also the Luxor has a pretty decent club called RA in it you should definately go, there's a lot of opportunity to take girls back to your hotel room as the Luxor and the Excalibur are connected buy both walkways and trams.

Stay right on the strip. You'll be glad you did.

I'm headed there in about a week and a half. Last time I was in Vegas I wasn't impresed with the food except for the Brazillian steakhouse (in the Mirage, I think). Supposed to be a GOOD Mexican joint at the Venetian (they have a sister restaurant here).

As for going by yourself, why not? People go to Vegas to PARTY. You should have no problem finding people who want to have a good time and wouldn't mind including you.
