Too much protein?

So, I did some googling but didn't come up with much. Are there any negative effects of too much protein intake over other sources of calories?

(IE not because of the calories, yes I know that intake of too many calories and no working out will make someone fat, but that goes for fat and carbs too)

I ask this because I've recently switched from a pretty high carb diet to a mainly protein diet - tuna, chicken breast, beef, peanuts, etc.

Too much protein? No such thing!!

There is no evidence of a high protein diet being harmful in any way HOWEVER sufficient fibre and water intake is a must to help out your kidneys.

You should be excreting healthily (not going into any more detail because I'm eating at the moment and would rather not think of it) and your urine should be as clear as possible.

It's hard to get fat off a protein diet because of the metabolic raise associated with high protein intake.

You can't survive on protein alone though, you need carbs (energy source) and fats (hormone production) in your diet as well, don't forget that.

Thanks, and when purchasing beef - is the leanest almost always the best choice? (IE 95% lean)

If you can afford it, certainly.

Fullfat beef is fine for a pro/fat meal though, and can always be drained/rinsed to remove a lot of the fat.. but if you can afford the 95% stuff then buy that save yourself the trouble! :)

As long as you're lifting and still eating carbs and fat, a high protein diet is safe.

Atkins is crap IMO. Great way to lose your kidneys.

Well damn, I'm on 2.2-2.3g at the moment and looking to bump it to 2.5g soon. When my kidneys give out I'll let you know.

What do you mean 1g of your body weight? You mean 1g per pound?

ketosis is induced by lack of carbos, not amount of protein.

But if you focus too much on high protein, you tend to neglect your carb intake. I'm not saying it always happens, and you were right to point that out, but it does happen with some people.

So the GNC stuff isn't good for ya?

Uh ohhhhh...

I went out and bought the 100% WHEY product made by GNC. You know. That giant tub of it. (Chocolate flavour)
If memory serves me, I think that stuff has like 20g of protein per 8 fl oz. Are you guys saying that stuff shouldn't be used by anyone under 200 lbs?

I drank down glass last night after my work out. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with it, but I didn't feel real good about an hour later. Then this morning my uring was really really really dark... No burning and not pungent smelling or anything... Just really dark. (Jesus, I was just trying to help my body repair the muscle tissue....lol)

Is the WHEY Protein thing NOT a good idea for me? I"m 6' at 180 lbs. Working out 2 days on and 1 day off.

I usually take in 500 calories less than I use in a day too... According to Fitday.com

wunnaBsmooth, your problem is lack of water. You're not drinking enough water throughout the day. It has nothing to do with that protein shake.

Thanks for the info....

shiftkey,
I've been noticing my water intake isn't that deep. Infact my diet as a whole is pretty shytty. But I'm working on it. Thanks bro

Killapetehog
Thanks for the info and clearing up my confusion. I was worried the protein was beating the shyt out of my kidneys or something.....lol

Like I said before. I just started working out this week. So I"m not over any start up humps yet.
Since this whole thing is pretty new to me, I don't want to get into a bad position right off the bat...

Hopefully, I'll get it straight soon!

i've been eating alot of fish (salmon and tuna) as my primary meats because there seems to just enouh fat in them to supliment my diet.

I usually have a single low fat pop tart if i'm hungry in the morning (2 or three times a week). River Salmon loacse (sp) witn a block of firm tofu and low sodium soy sauce. And for dinner ususally another random fish (orange roughy, cod, swodfish[If I can find it] rock fish, etc) and steamed boc choy.

It's pretty basic but I like my food to be boring that way i don't think about it often and focus on other things.

Anything wrong with this?

So today after I got home from working out I wanted to eat dinner and include a good amount of protein in it.

I didn't have any milk, and in addition, reading the horrors of milk on here I had been a bit turned off by it.

So I took the 95% lean beef I had, cooked it, added sloppy joe sauce and a scoop of Whey protein. The sloppy joe sauce has such an overpowering taste that you barely notice the whey protein taste. So what I'm asking is - is there any reason why I would NEED to have the protein in a liquid form or can I just mix it with other foods?

Thanks.

Whey can be cooked with just fine.. you can even make stuff like pancakes and muffins with it (in place of or with flour).

Dunno why you'd put it in the beef like that though, but to each their own!
