To young to work out?

Hey I'm 14 and basically I'm wondering how much is too much for a kid my age to be working out. I ask because a kid I know worked out a lot for the wrestling team. He worked out so much that apperently his leg gave out and he stopped growing completely, so now he can't wrestle. I'd like to start working out regularly but my brother says it will stunt (spelling?) my growth. What do you think?

u can get an xray growth plate taken to see when u will be fully grown

read diesel's guide to bulking up. he mentions it

if i were u, i wouldn't lift yet

Honestly you should see a doctor if you really want to lift.

Have you hit your growth spurt yet? if yes, you probably can.


Also, when young make sure you do more reps and less weight. So I was told by my team's trainer when I started lifting.

lifting is nothing more than using your muscles, so you're not going to stunt your growth by using your muscles. It is probably a good idea to minimize stress on your joints while you're growing, meaning Coolage's advice about more reps and less weight is probably good advice. Dont' follow the guide to bulking up until you're older, but there's no reason you shouldn't be lifting at all. If you do, you'll notice the difference, and it will make a huge difference once you get to the point where you can go all-out.

Hm... my brother lifted when he was young, around 11. He's 6'2 now. He was about 5'4 or so when he lifted. He was in the 150's lb. range.

I say weight lifting has NO effect AT ALL if you provide sufficient nutrient. You most likely wouldn't or don't know how imo, so I'd say follow the above's advice. Otherwise if you're really truly commited. By all means, lift all out. My bro is much taller than me and I'm an ama fighter that barely lift.

You're old enough to lift weights. I started lifting when I was 14, and I'm the tallest guy in my family. You'll only stunt your growth if you're a complete dumbass. An example would be loading 500 pounds on a squat bar and attempting it.

I think you'd have a lot higher chance injuring your growth plates playing sports. The only guy I know who injured his growth plates did so playing kickball. I've never even heard of anyone who had stunted growth from lifting.

It's a wife's tale.

It APPEARS that it stuns your growth, but actually it doesn't.

ALL of the successful competitive power lifters are short by definition. All other factors being the same, a shorter guy will lift the weight easier, cause he has a smaller distance. :)

Therefore, the thinking goes: "This short guy lifted so much he won medals, but he's short. Therefore, lifting slowed down his growth"

On the other hand, it's the opposite: "two guys trained the same amount. A guy who was supposed to be tall, grew tall and therefore didn't win any medals. A guy who was supposed to be short, trained, had an advantage, and because of this he won."

It's like saying that judo causes you to be shorter. It's just that you have an advantage at judo when you're shorter.
