Hey Lads,
I had an interesting experience today. After work some friends and I got some ****tails.
Imagine a stereotypical LGBTQIA+VOTNGNBOTNBI nonsense person. That's my coworker. Me and the boys are just joking around about any dumb ****.
The words "retard", "crazy" "bitches" etc come up in those jokes. At every point she proceeds to say you can't/shouldn't say that.
After a few times it dawns on me that she really has no philosophical ground to stand on.
So I ask - " Let me ask you. What do you think gives you the ability to determine what specific speech I can or can not use?"
her response is essentially - it makes me/other people feel bad.
My answer - " So what. Either I censor my speech to attempt to pander to what i think your feelings are. OR I just speak the way I speak and maybe you get offended and have to deal with it like a ****ing adult like the rest of us?"
at which point she just keeps quiet.
I'm curious what you guys think? How do you resolve the tension between being empathetic to others feelings and beliefs but wanting to say things that may or may not be offensive?
