Ever felt stuck on a rut? Ever felt that you're going nowhere and you have no goal besides just not being who you are right now? Well, this might be just what you need. This is not a magic pill by any means.

A little about me before I start: I was born in Medellin, Colombia during the Pablo Escobar days. Two of my grandparents were russian so I look way different from everyone else, which catches attention easily. I grew up around threats but none happened to me. When I was 10, I got mugged by some guy with a butcher's knife, and it was the start of many happenings, like almost getting killed at 14, which marked my life ever since. I grew up being the awkward weird kid then, hated by all at school (all-male, uck) and hating everyone. At 19 I decided to change, but I went nowhere, because I had no idea and negativity pretty much held me back.

I’m also studying Software engineering, and since I’m pretty much always the “Project Quarterback” I learned a few things about managing projects, from small to large. Then it hit me! I’m my own project!

So, the methodology to manage this is called SCRUM, which works for small and medium sized projects. This is how it works and how you can pull it out:

1- First and foremost, one has to write a product backlog. This is basically a wish list. In this case, it’s what you want of yourself, it’s your north and goals.
2- A project is divided into many SPRINTS. Each sprint last the same time and they range from 8 to 30 days long. You’re supposed to do some tasks while that sprint lasts.
3- At the beginning of each sprint, there’s a meeting. On each one, you set the tasks for that sprint, according to the goals on the p. backlog. Also, you review how the tasks were completed and how many failed and why, and how to fix them. All the tasks are written down at the Sprint backlog.
4- Every day, ask these questions: What did you do yesterday? What’s planned for today? Any problem keeping you from your goal and how to fix them?
5- While on the sprint, you update the sprint file. But don’t delete or add any task.
6- Keep on going until the goals on the Prod Backlog are met.

Each sprint uses a backlog file. I’ll provide the file. It’s on Excel and there are some notes that will help you on how to use it, but I’m sure it just needs some tinkering in order to learn how to use it.

Why SCRUM? Why something so complex? Why not just going out and doing things? First, without any goal and scheduling, you’re drifting away wherever the wind blows. You have no direction. You’re going to land somewhere, but not where(and when) you want to. Second, it’ll gauge how much you’re really trying and where you’re failing. Third, it shows you how much you’ve progressed and will give you feedback.

Go ahead and try it. Take it seriously and it will help you. It helped me a lot, I'm more social and I feel I'm on the right track.

Oh, yeah, the file :

So, what do you think? Are you willing to try? Do you disagree? Feel free to comment.

I'm sure the file works well with Excel 2007. If you have an earlier version , or if you are a Linux lover, import it using Google Docs, even though it's slower there.

Nice, I had 2003. I used google docs to make it .xml

Looks good I'll be using this thanks man.

Can you explain this a little better though? I am confused what the 3 pages are for. IF you can explain page by page that would be awesome, maybe some screenshots if I'm lucky hehe :D

Very busy spreadsheet this is...

This is a tool to keep track and plan a project. It's used in software engineering so it's a little weird if you haven't known about this before. I'll be glad to explain. Also, if you havent noticed, this used to be in spanish, and I might have forgotten to translate a few things :p

Page 1: Config

Under Tasks: Type
It's the type of task you're going to do. Say it's goign to be about inner game, or about approaches, or maybe the task is going to be confidence-oriented. You can pick one of those types in page 2, so list every type of task you can think of.

Under Tasks: States
The different states a task might go through. You can pick one of those in page 2.

Team: Who is on the project. Usually just you.

Rest days : Leave it clear

N of Sprint : Which "Sprint" this belongs to. Refer to the original post.

Days : How many days the sprint lasts.

Anythign else is self-explainatory

Page 2: Datos (Data)

You have to add every task you're going to accomplish at the beggining of each sprint to this page. For ever task, you need:

Backlog : you can leave it out

Task : What you're going to do.

Type : One of the types of task defined in Page 2

State : State of the task. Completed or pending or whatever, they're defined in page 1

Resp : Who is responsible. In this case, it's always you.

Effort : Do you notice that there are a few dates above? Okay, on this boxes, you have to write when you're goign to do the task and how many hours are you going to spend that day doing it. So, say, you're goign to do X approaches on Oct 15 and 16 and they're goign to take you 3 hours each day, then you put a 3 in the box corresponding to that day.

Page 3: Graficos (Graphs)

Output only page. You'll see how many tasks per day you have, how many hours per day you planned and stuff like that. It'll gauge your effort in a simple way.

By the way, using this requires a lot of commitment and the will to do it.I'm sure that's why nobody but you has commented or tried this out. It's easier to read somebody yelling you to "man up" than do something for yourself. Please people, if you just dislike it or you have an opinion about this, just comment!

Thanks for that, still kind of confused but I will spend some time to figure this out.

edit: AHHH WTF ok I get it now. 3rd page "graphs" is output so you have all the macros and commands in there to show how much we do/gotta do/progress/etc.

Ok I will leave that one alone. Yeah this is pretty useful man. I actually have a non-self development project to work on right now so I will use it for that. Thanks for this!
