I assume he was pretty sure he could take them. It's just 40 guys, and the guns were plastic, I heard. Plus. the chick asked for his help, as "soldier brother". He said something like "fighting under orders is my duty as a soldier. Saving [this chick] is my duty as a human being [man]"
And you have to remember, his "kuhuri" or whatnot is like a foot long and kept scalpel-sharp.
Definitely not this. No sane person, even trained would think they could take on 40 people armed with only a knife.
I guess different cultures have different views. Dishonor and disrespect are not taken lightly in Asian culture the same as honor and respect are valued highly. He most likely knew what he was going to do may be futile but if he left something like that happen and didn't stand up for what was right he wouldn't be able to live down that memory.
He gave his wallet up during the robbery because he stated losing a wallet is definitely not worth dying for but having a young girl who could be your younger sister daughter being raped infront of you while you watch and do nothing is not something that you could respect yourself for if you sat back and did nothing to prevent it. He was prepared to die than let something like that happen.
Obviously if you have no chance of succeeding it would be stupid, but he knew he had a chance. He was a trained soldier on a train where he had the ability to funnel in the robbers through a single file line in the train due to the narrow walkways. Obviously 40 to 1 didn't give him great odds but atleast he had odds and that's why i believe he did it.
