Last Thursday, I plugged in and started up an old computer from way back in 1998. I went out of the room for a few minutes while it started up, and came back to smell something like a mix of burning rubber and electronics! (a quick search on google indicates that this may be due to the Power Supply Unit or some other component frying)

I quickly pressed the off button on the computer, unplugged it and took it outside. The smell was... awful.

After two days of airing out my room (opening the window) while I sleep in another room, there are still traces of the smell whenever I walk into my room.

I have two questions though:
1. does anyone know if the smell is harmful?
2. how long do you think the smell will last?

the smell is not harmful (lol :D ), just open your windows all the way or better yet, open the window in the room next to it and leave the door open so that you create a ....wind...... (i forgot the word, airflow maybe?). it'll help even more. got rid of the major part of the smell in a day.

I just found out that it may have been electrolytic capacitors in the power supply burning and vaporising (thus releasing gas and the smell!).

That is scary :(.
