I had never heard of the "Promise Ring" until about ten years ago. Women would be ecstatic that their man is buying her a "promise ring". I couldn't help but wonder, WTF is the purpose? What is the promise?

I think I've figured out the purpose. The Promise Ring is given to a woman in hope to keep her interested, and buy some time until he has enough money to buy her an engagement ring. Most of the time, the motivation behind buying a Promise Ring is fear; fear that the woman is losing interest.

Am I right on this?

I thought promise rings were those things bible thumpers got saying they'd wait to have sex (who usually ended up being some of the slutier girls in school).

Bingo. Every friend of mine who bought one was being pressured for marriage and wasn't in a financial place to do so.

promise rings are supposed to be for high school kids.
you know, too damn young to think about marriage but the chick comes from one of those families that wants her to be in a committed relationship by the time she graduates. so the poor boy spends 100 bucks on some dinky little ring to satisfy everyone and then they end up going to two separate colleges and things don't work out in the long run.

i'm gonna tell my sons not to do this. it just doesn't seem right.

Never try to read a woman's mind. It is a scary place. Ignore her confusing signals and mixed messages. Assume she is interested in you and act accordingly.

They are considered a chivalrous way of acknowledging that you were the first one to screw their daughter; popular in rural areas.

Edit: Never bought one

Hahahaa, a promise ring is a ring given by a boy to a girl to show love and dedication to her. It is a new age symbol to show that they are going to date exclusive to one another.

I also have some wonderful hallmark cards for purchase. Nice and sappy.

Dear Des,
Another gimic by the retail industry......There's a bit of a fashion amongst estranged husbands down here, you know that AFC type, who can't wait for divorce to happen before tying themselves up yet again by offering a commitment ring to some ditzy broad, its worn on the wedding finger, looks like an engagement ring....very insecure behaviour.

the real truth behind the ring. South park episode of the same name, same topic. Once you get the ring, all you get to do is watch greys anatomy.

In real life it's another convenient confluence between a girls desperation to get a commitment, guys insecurity, social pressure, ring sellers, etc. I think they had an episode of happy days about them. I'd imagine you'd only see them in god-fearin folk nowadays.

Whoever and whatever they are for, they were invented as a marketing ploy to sell useless (usually bad) jewelry to saps.

I'm a beleiver in jewelry as an expression and as a gift, if I'm in the mood and in the black and its nice jewelry. But no one (especially jewel merchants) is going to tell me what to buy and why. I get the engagment ring and the wedding band ideas. (Been there, done that, got the t-shirt). But promise rings? That's someone making money on you, nothing more.

This website is all about how to deal with women. A big part of the advice here seems to boil down to 'grow a pair'. We should all do the same when we're being sold useless crap. If it makes you feel good, buy it. It they convince you you need it, you're just moving the AFC concept to how you live.

Well, there's the promise ring of virginity, where a conservative or religious father will buy one for his daughter as a symbol of her promise to remain a virgin until she gets married.

Then there is the promise ring of engagement, which basically says "I promise to buy you a real engagement ring soon, but in the meantime I'm going to give you this because I'm afraid you'll get impatient and find someone else."

There's nothing really wrong with the former, if both father and daughter agree to it.

The latter, however, is weak and lame. No self-respecting man would do this.

That seems creepy to me, and wrong on a lot of levels, just my opinion though.
