As much as I hate to say it I do agree with this article, the new role model IS beta male. Granted this article was written by a woman and it is about movies, but tragically she is correct - all pop-culture has been offering for decades is men as helpless morons in need of women to "fix" them.

I like Homer Simpson, I think he's equally macho as well as confused AFC. Best character in the history of TV. A baffoon, a good father, a complete idiot, a guy who looks out for his family, a total slob, and a success at the same time. I've always found it amusing that the characters in The Simpsons and King of the Hill are far more developed than any real-life characters on TV.

As for Gore, I don't think fighting for the environment is Beta; I think cow-towing to corporations for kick-backs and ignoring our future is AFC.

As for those shows like "The Office" and the sort, I wouldn't know. I don't watch much TV, except for "The Simpsons" and "Law and Order," which has gone terribly down the tubes.

I'd say you find more AFC men in real life than you do on TV and in the movies.

I didn't intend this to be yet another "feminists are ruining western society" thread, but rather as an observation of how readily men (lower case 'm' emphasized) are aquiescing to this "betas are hot" nonsense. It's not news that all media in pop-culture has become feminine-centric for decades now, but what really gets me about this article is how men now take for granted that they're just slackers and need women to help them out. It would hardly be the case if guys were finding some kind of masculine backbone here to change this image, but we're now experiencing the 4th generation of guys who'll lie down for this.

I've seen the previews for 'Knocked Up' and from what I can tell it's standard female-centric tripe. Of course the vast majority of movies these days have at least some element of this (go see Shrek 3, you'll about puke) even when the movie's not directly about gender issuse, but this is a gauge for at least what Hollywood thinks is the spirit of the times. In reality betas regularly get with mediocre women, or when they do hook up with better it doesn't take long for it a woman to see the writing on the wall. This article is dangerous in that it gives the impression that hot women want beta males by preference now, which the real world simply wont validate. As much as our media would like betas to have some "haven't tried it yet" hip-to-be-beta ideas mold our perception of what 'should' be, in the real world hot women prefer the attention of attractive, successful, confident and positively masculine men (even when they say they don't).

It is just that 'betas' (non-geek betas) are in much greater circulation as they are often more sociable.

Because of this, many betas tie up the girls into relationships. The girls stray once and awhile to get real satisfaction in a one-nigher with an alpha, causing the beta to get jealous etc.

I'd probably be what most consider alpha, very manly and good-looking (so i've heard many times). I'm very successful financially and have my own business, am a body-builder etc. etc.

That character is the most likeable in the show and is indeed written mostly as a beta, both in the UK and US versions. The US version is more handsome than the UK, but what the article fails to mention is that no women viewers find the character sexy. He's the epitome of the nice guy that a woman thinks one of her friends should date.

I've heard more women saying they find Stan Marsh's dad in South Park sexy (true!).

But yeah, it's more beta-prop from a gloating yet desperate-for-a-real-man hypocrite.
