For the last nine months or so, ever since I graduated with a networking degree I have been trying to find a job in my field. I have to admit its been really tough though since most employers vastly prefer experience over education and certification. I think I must have sent out over a hundred resumes to different positions and have only gotten three job interview.

For the last month or so I have been volunteering at the local food bank, first helping out in the warehouse, now I am doing their computer and network support. I am also working on getting more certifications. Has anyone else out there been in a similar position and if so is there anything more I can do to help secure a job in my field?

Its very hard to get a job in the IT field right now. Your best bet is to know someone who knows someone whos hiring and get hired that way.

You are right, most companies will take experience over cert's. Take for example A+. I would rather have someone who I know, knows there **** and doesent have a A+ cert than to have someone who has an A+ cert but has never actually worked in the help desk field to work for my company.

there are some things that people want from they employees that the shcools cant teach , like new programs and so on... therefor in my mind experiance is more worth then A grades in a shcool where the teacher dont really know nothing...
if he was good then he wouldnt have a job as a teacher...

I don't know about everyone else but i don't think its that bad, I just finished a diploma and i have done a couple of lots of work experience and a couple of contracts (still not much experience) and i had a couple of offers after about a week of finishing but it was just high stress call center work so i passed. I might change my mind later on but if you want to get in i think having low expectations helps.

Hm...interesting.

Could this mean that I'll be screwed when I finish my Associate's Degree (in Computer Networking Technology) and ultimately, something from a four-year school (I plan to go to a four-year afterwards, I just don't know where yet)?

Sadly enough, I'm hoping that I can convince my father to cosign a mortgage for me, so I can be a landlord (since getting a job is seeming impossible for me). Odd that I'm considering something that doesn't require a lot of computer knowledge (apart from the fact that I could network my apartments on my own and other landlords can't).

Yes, I'm unemployed. I admit it. I do have a legally registered business so if I fix computer for people it's more "official" that way, but I rarely do that (advertising costs a lot).
