Got in my first fight this year, not proud, but not disappointed either. It was a rather awkward way it came about, and I felt like the guy from "Of mice and men"... "Don't hurt my friend!"

Well I've decided to move up a bit in my fighting life. There are a lot of ways I saw that I was "wrong" in the fight, it wasn't even a fight. It was defending myself, while defending my friend, while keeping the guy I was holding safe from any ****ers who felt like taking a cheap shot.

What do I start on? What should I do to get better at fighting?

The way I saw the fight was that "there was something happening" beside me. My friend was being punched by another guy who came out of the blue screaming about his girlfriend. I stood up and went "heyyyy" and asked what was happening. I heard my friend muffle and I just wrapped my arms around the other guys and seperated them. I don't see it as anything, but I know its not a desired way to fight... Don't know why I feel that way, but I do.

What books should I look into, I don't want to be a lame fighter all my life.

Bonez, you seem like a good guy. A guy who stands up for his friends.

But I am curious.

Where did you get the notion that you will get better as a "fighter" from reading a book???!!!!!!!

I don't know, maybe because my mind wanders when I'm being trained in person. Been through 6 years of kung fu and I don't have the same emotions as others do. I don't have control over myself, or maybe I've forced myself to be lazy. Maybe a book will help me.

I'd take another chance, take a fall, take a shot for youuuu. ohhhhOHHHH

Hey man, you did good. Not sure what books to recommend, but perhaps some muay thai and grappling styles (BJJ) can help you out? Kung fu I did as a wee little boy and yes, it's all about that self-control stuff, but now I do jujutsu and it is more "fighting." I don't know how to describe it, but this stuff I can actually use in a fight if I ever get into one.

Good place to look for books: amazon.com

Read the reviews man. Good luck.

kung fu, is really just flashy memorized moves, but not really good for street combat. I'd recommend you look into muay thai (spelling?)

I don't know what to ask. My mind keeps running back and forth saying I should have let them fight. I went to a party afterwards and first thing I was TOLD to go into the washroom by 3 girls at the same time. I sat in there, pressed play on the stereo and washed up. I walked out of the room and took my glasses off just in case, I saw the guy and shook his hand right there.

The whole damned situation makes me feel so stupid, like I'm an e-tard waiting for my next hit and just accepting whats going on around me.

Thats where I see the "fight" in me. Not fitness, not skills. I could kick most anybodys' ass, I don't fear physically fighting, but its the other fight. The fight where I stand up to people, stand up for myself and ****. I hate being so passive. Tell me how to be more assertive, without being an *******. I don't want to go from loser to bruiser over night.

Man, relax, what're you tripping over, you did good :) You pulled a guy off your friend. What else was there for you to do mate? Slam your fists against your rib cage like Tarzan? :D

What do you feel unhappy with, because I'd say your actions were pretty assertive.

You were asserting yourself. If you were being passive you would have just let it happen.

Wrestling, boxing, muay thai, and brazilian jiu-jitsu!!

But try to be able to GET OUT OF CONFRONTATION. Fighting really isn't cool. But if it comes down to it you should be able to protect yourself.

Telling you now guys, last time I fought I broke a cops arm when I was blacked out. Took 5 of them to throw me in the drunk tank. I got tazed 3 times and pepper sprayed and it took twenty punches in the gut and a broken arm to finally get me in the cell. I was sober in an hour asking why I was in there begging to go to the hospital... I am not a push over, and I'm not proud of it. I had a friend go into a coma that night, and "positive thinking" got me through it... last thing I heard myself say was "he's going to be okay, he's my friend, I'm going to wake him up right now"... he is alive, and still my best friend, but the cop is still on leave with a broken arm, so I am still not happy

I want to learn how to fight for myself, not to bully people around and make them so scared that they just bow to my wishes. I want to be so assertive that people accept what I want. I don't want people to just see me as such an awesome (literal) person that they just wait until I'm gone to start *****ing about me. I want them to stay the same, tell me whats wrong about me while I'm still in the room.

I DO NOT want to be a bruiser, I want respect, not sympathy or fear. I want people to want me around, I don;t want people to scarmble to make me happy when I get in the room, I don't want them to get comlacent and wait for me to finish their work when I get in the room. I want respect.

Specific enough for you, or is there more I need to say?

Fighting can be learned through teachers and books. But, it's mostly learned through experience. A fight usually doesnt usually last more than a minute. In that time you won't really have a chance to think about what some book taught you. You have to go on instincts and be confident in yourself.

Uuuh, for the good of mankind, I don't think you should get any better at fighting. At all.

If you really broke a cop's arm why aren't you serving your sentence for aggravated assault on a police officer? Because you're full of horse****? Yeah a guy that is upset because he only pulled someone off his friend and was too scared to throw a punchin a fight suddenly is rodney king on steroids. right...

Also your post says you got in your first fight, which it isn't even really because you didnt get hit or land anything, then you dont consider fighting 5 cops and breaking one of the arms, and them breaking your arm a fight?

You said that was what happened last time you got in a fight, but your post says you just got in your first fight. Something is missing here, care to clear up the plot holes?

Bonez, you're dealing with internal issues, by thinking the external ones will save the day.

This is ALL internal, buddy. You know it, and I know it.

I still agree with your intuiton that training will help. But you have to make sure you have the right mind set, and perspective in order to benefit in the way you want to.

Trust me.,

This is all inside your head.

Gee, and I'm usually the only one who notices the obvious weirdness of some posters.

Okay, so any guy could exaggerate some crazy story about his night in jail. Okay, this guy is a bouncer who doesn't know much about fighting.

But this guy is also a "nursing student" with a "364 heart rate".

I think he's just posting at various forums with idiotic stories for attention, probably needs a banning or two.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm i believe that story "you kicked 5 cops asses while being tased"

You probably shouted "don't tase me bro"

If your gonna lie at least make it somewhat believable.

The heart rate thing was just for fun  The rest is true though, except I'm not in nursing anymore... and I'm a door man, not a bouncer. For the record, dislocated shoulder, I wasn't fighting them, I was fighting to not go in the cell.

The word fight means fists to all of you guys so just drop the subject.

Just because a woman listens to you and acts interested in what you say doesn't mean she really is. She might just be acting polite, while silently wishing that the date would hurry up and end, or that you would go away... and never come back.
