THE CEREBELLUM AND THE DJ
Hi. I came across this idea when I was re-reading one of Pook's articles, "Kill that desperation". In the article, he quotes fellow DJ Krd:
way to "Good Guy", for all aspiring DJs. After all, it requires a major
shift in mental frame of reference.
Also, it seems to happen in different ways for different DJs. As I was
reading it, I theorized something. But before that, some background on
my "theory"...
Some time ago, I was reading about the cerebellum --- I forgot where.
The cerebellum stands for "little brain". It is placed underneath the
brain (cerebrum) and is smaller. It works differently from the brain.
To illustrate its purpose, the author describing the learning of playing
the piano, for example. We all know how (or at least figure) how hard it is in the beginning. We have to *think* where each finger should be put,
we have to *think* which fingers to use, their sequence, the duration,
the force... It's nightmare! Why doesn't it come up naturally, like
breathing or walking?!
Well, have you seen how hard it is for someone to walk properly after that
person had a car/bike/whatever accident and was in bed for several months?
The poor fellow has to *learn* how to walk all over again!! We'd assume
that after learning how to walk... you woulnd't forget it! Well, it seems
it does. And what about using a pen to write? Or doing trivial stuff like
punching numbers on a cell phone while we're walking. Why would it be
trivial?!
Well, let's get back to the brain and the cerebellum, the "little brain".
The authors argued that the function of the cerebellum is to STORE SEQUENCES
OF AUTOMATIC ACTIONS. Let me elaborate. When someone is experienced in
playing the piano, or guitar, or drums, or other activities like skating
or playing basketball or whatever... the cerebellum takes action. So, in
essence:
The brain is used to "think", to predict, to learn. The cerebellum is used
to "act", to automate.
NOTE: About "breathing" and unvoluntary motions in our body, like the
beating of the heart, it is not actually controlled by the cerebellum as
it may seem from what've conveyed. Actually, these two actions, for example,
are controlled at a much more basic level in the spinal cord, at the base
of the brain. It includes sweating, bowel movements, sneazing and other
stuff. Our nervous system has a "pre-programming" when we're born that allows the body not to die in 1 minute, and breathing and heart-beating is
an example. But learning to walk and to talk... that we've to learn! And
that's where the cerebrum and cerebellum come in.
When we speak, we're not exactly thinking of the appropriate words (except
in situations where approriate wording is imperative), but we're concerned
mainly on the IDEAS that we want to convey. We're not thinking how to place
your lips or your tongue to forme a syllable.
So what does this have to do with being a DJ?
I say it may have some relation! We've to change our behavior so it becomes
NATURAL for us to approach girls. It takes practice for a shy guy to become
an outgoing, fun fellow, to convey all the great guy that he is!
So, IT IS NECESSARY TO ACTUALLY *TURN OFF THE COMPUTER AND GO OUT THERE* and
practice it. We can *learn* (the BRAIN will learn) from reading how to
become a DJ. But it is *imperative* to put it to practice, so it gradually
becomes second nature: THE CEREBELLUM MAKES IT SO. We seem "natural", we
"learn" to be "natural"... we ADDAPT!
We know we can't play the piano outright when we start. We know we're bound
to taste the dirt when we start learning out to ballance on a skateboard,
we know the waves will swallow us when we start to learn how to ballance
on a surf board. We know how difficult it is to learn calculus, but when we
finally do, it all becomes so clear and obvious...
So, WE REALLY NEED TO LET OUR CEREBELLUM TAKE OVER WHEN NECESSARY. And that
is achieved through PRACTICE. When we PRACTICE we develop our own individual
style. That style is UNIQUE to us, we make it our own based on our own
experiences and our own, individual, character. A DJ doesn't exactly act as
the fellow DJ next to him because they're ESSENTIALLY DIFFERENT PERSONS.
Each develops his technique based on his own beliefs and experiences.
I guess this is what girls want from guys when they say the guys should "be
themselves"... When being a DJ is second nature to them.
In conclusion:
PRACTICE. A LOT. LEARN. And let the cerebellum do its magic...![Smile :) :)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
Any feedback?
P.S.: PLEASE don't go around mumbling "come on, cerebellum, help me out
here!" that's so uncool...
You've been warned.

Well, I expect that to happen when transitioning from "Nice Guy" all the"I think I am somewhere in between 'Decent Guy' and 'Neat Guy'. I do approach women and talk to them, but I still feel like it requires a lot of effort and energy on my part. It's something that just doesn't come naturally for me."
