there have been other people with the same calculating ability. numbers aren't that special to be honest.

what i find more fascinating is that they are using some kind of 'method' that they aren't even aware of to do these computations.

it kind of suggests to me that there is so much more to life than we realize. that there are 'methods' or 'schemas' of how 'things' relate to each other that we haven't even discovered yet.

the human mind is capable of amazing things...

whats amazing to me is that he isnt retarded in any other way like rain man or anything. just an ordinary guy with awesome abilities. like you could go get a drink and hang out with him. if he worked out he'd actually be good-looking.

I've heard of similar things that involve synethesia in people who have perfect pitch.

I found it hilarious that one person in the video got hit in the head with a baseball and then was able to remember the weather of everyday in his life.

I feel sorry for Savants. They are brilliant in some areas but at the expense of others. It just proves that there is limit to how much information the human brain can maintain without losing other cognative abilities. Most would give up this gift just to be normal and live a normal life.

I can repeat the alphabets backward. The first time I tried it was when I got pulled over few weeks ago for DUI.

Agreed. I think our brains are purposely limited to allow us to interact more easily. Ever notice how the most intelligent people are usually the most socially awkward?

its just because they are too busy being intelligent.
Define Intelligents.

Their brain either acts like a calculator or a storage memory, but when it comes to figuring out the secrets of the universe like Einstien or Hawking's then we have a problem.

It sounded like he was thinking-in-pictures, in which case he's probably either autistic or been touched by autism. That would explain why he can do his numbers trick.

There's a lot of people who think that there is an apparent link between autism and genius. Some PhD's and some Nobel Prize winners were autistic and have said they did what they did because of their autism and not in spite of it.

If you want to know more, check out a book called "Thinking in Pictures" by a woman with a PhD who is autistic. Also, Asperger's Syndrome is the type of High Functioning Autism most associated with genius.

FYI: It's pronounced "Asp-er-gers" and not "Azz-burger". It's named after the man who first wrote about it, and it's not an Azz-hamburger.

One woman who is a low-functioning autistic explained that for years she couldn't talk because she didn't realize the sounds she was hearing was someone trying to communicate with her.

If the genius-autism like is correct this also explains why most geniuses have been men: because more men get autism than women. Even without that, we do only have one X chromosome to defend us from mutation, and by it's very nature genius is statistically abnormal.

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.

You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.

If autism is the source of his genius then the idea that he has 'lost' something isn't true. An autistic never had it to begin with.

The research seems to indicate that brains come in different flavors. Did mint-chocolate chip ice cream somehow 'lose' its cherry flavor? No, mint-chocolate chip ice cream never tasted like cherry to start with. The same seems to be true of the various kinds of brains.

Which reminds me... you know all those genius / engineers out in Silicon Valley? Guess what, their kids have a higher rate of autism than the general population: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/9.12/aspergers_pr.html

The answer may be raining all over Silicon Valley. And one of the best hopes of finding a cure may be locked in the DNA sequences that produced the minds that have made this area the technological powerhouse of the world.

Hmm, more proof of the power of visual thinking. I read a book on this once called the Einstein Factor, it taught a technique called image streaming that's supposed to develop visual thinking and increase IQ. I never really stuck with the method because I had other things on my plate, but perhaps I'll give it another shot over the Christmas break.
