Supplementing every meal vs. protein shakes to bulk up

I plan to eat 5 meals a day but instead of chugging down protein shakes I figure I could get in a lot more calories easier by just taking a "shot" of protein every meal along with a fixed "supplement meal"

For example:

I prepare a 500 calorie meal.

My supplement meal would be
2 scoops of whey: 100 calories
Meals 1-4: 1 piece of fruit/Meal 5: 2 servings V8: 100 calories
1 serving almonds: 150 calories

Total calories: 850


I like the way this is set up because this way I have more flexibility in preparing my main meals, Im putting in a lot of protein, and I get a consistent inflow of fruits, veggies, and nuts.

Any feedback would be appreciated

Whey doesn't have the same effect on your bodies protein synthesis. Whey will have your protein synthesis spike and crash after about 45mins(Sort of like candy and your insulin). What you want is your protein synthesis, go up, and stay at a good level for 3-4hrs(like an apple does to your insulin).

Eating Casine protein, like eggs, meat, cheese, etc. will give you the 3-4hrs. Whey will only give you 45mins. After your protein synthesis crashes, your muscle building stops.

And if you're taking in whey too often, eventually your protein synthesis won't respond to it. (IE: Having whey for breakfast, snack, lunch = by lunch it probably won't spike for very long, probably 20-30mins).

If you're trying to put on muscle, the goal is to keep your protein synthesis up for as long as possible.

Well I take the whey with my normal meal, which usually includes some kind of slow-digesting protein. Am i still doing myself a disservice though? Maybe supplement with casein?

because of the bulk of the food,it'll slow down the digestion overall-which is a good thing!that's cool because even if you have a tiny appetitite and only able to eat say 20 grams of protein ,50 grams of carbs and some veggies..add a scoop of whey and double the protein! :rockon:
4 meals like that and you're up to 200 grams already..which is more then enough to build muslce.

A lot of guys over at Ironaddicts are switching from whey to casein, but for you it probably doesn't matter. As long as you're taking your shakes with other types of food they'll be fine. In a pinch just drop a tablespoon of olive oil for every scoop of whey, it tastes fine and it'll slow the digestion as well.

Olive oil doesn't really do that, or at least it hasn't for me...

It's fine, you just shouldn't do it all the time. A lot of people do this for breakfast, have the whey to spike their protein synthesis first thing in the morning, than have the eggs to last for 3-4hrs.
Just don't use whey too much because your body responds to it less and less. Once your protein synthesis is up, you don't really have to spike it with whey anymore(except after workout).

If you get the good Dempsters bread that has like 12g of protein for two slices of bread, and have a tuna sandwich, you'll have hit your protein max for that meal.

BRILLIANT !!! HOW ON EARTH DID YOU LEARN ABOUT THAT !!!!

I would take 4 scoops of the tech X mass stuff after a meal, but I'd wake up in the middle of the night or very very early in the morning (out of starvation) to make another..

I tried pouring about 4 TBL of olive oil and BAM, I was having the good deep REM Cycle sleep I use to have when I was just starting out and would get full easily !!! dude !!! MASSIVE REP POINTS FOR THAT !!

insane!

also insane for being able to take in that much whey

1.whey tastes like ****
2. whey makes your fart stink
