Recently i got sunburned when at the beach and my face, shoudler and back is red. I put on aloe vera gel for like a day already but my face is still like this although i had pain in my back but that has stopped. Anyone who had been sunburnt before know how long it takes for your face to go back to normal? ty

You've never been sunburned before?

It really depends on how bad it is and your genetics. The alloe should speed recovery though. Rest and proper diet also helps (like with any injury).

The legnth it lasts for depends on the serverity of the sunburn, it could last 2-3 days typicaly and then the skin will ussualy start to peal. It is important to try and keep the area covered till healed thou obviously if it is on your face you dont have much choice short of staying in all day.

no, i never got sunburned before because i rarely go to the beach. Even when i was at the beach I didn't feel anything until I was leaving and I was red. My face was really red and my shoulders and back too. And yep I have to stay home all day now until the redness goes away. What do u mean by keepign the area covered? All i do now is just put aloe vera gel over my face and walk around the house. Is drinking cold water a bad idea because I think i heard s1 say that it cools you so it is bad?

Men frequently err by talking too much. They often monopolize conversations, droning on and on about topics that bore women to tears. They think they're impressing the women when, in reality, they're depressing the women.

Covered as in, not exposed to more direct sunlight.

Drinking cold water is fine - what you heard is likely an old wives tail.

Speaking of cold, you might want to take cold showers until it heals. Hot water tends to sting.

Depends on your complexion. I get one good burn a summer then I just tan after that. Redhead-type complexion works much differently because a lot of them don't ever get tan or get a lot of freckles. I get freckles too, but not like a redhead.

Well, I can tell you that I recover in anywhere from 1 to 5 days whenever I get sunburned. But I have a good tolerance built up - I don't even get a burn if I stay out for an hour with no sunblock at the beach.

Don't put anything on it - it traps the heat in and aggravates it.

Treat it like any other burn - immediate cold water for 10+ minutes. After 24 hours or so, when the heat leaves the skin, THAT is the time to apply aloe vera.

Create self-fulfilling prophecies. Always assume the positive. Assume she likes you. Assume she wants to talk to you. Assume she wants to go out with you. When you think positive, positive things happen.

Wait 24 hours? Where'd you hear that? Running cold water over it first I agree with.

It's an SOP for sunburn. Australia's the most dangerous country in the world for sunburn, and I spend a lot of time teaching First Aid to beach goers.

Also, as a surfer and beach lover, I could be considered a professional sun-tanner haha.

With any burn, you want the heat to dissipate before applying any gel or cream to prevent trapping heat in the wound and prolonging recovery time.

10+ mins of cold water. Apply creams 24 hours after.

OK, need to decrease inflammation...

1% hydrocortisone cream (Cortaid) to reduce the inflammation on the sunburn.

Try over the counter pain med...advil, alleve, asprin for pain relief.

Also try to cover your sunburned area to prevent further sun exposure. The tissue is even more sensitive to further damage.

News flash, 80% of what we call signing of ageing is photoageing due to UVA/UVB sun exposure.

FYI: Sunburn and tanning are maladaptive responses to UV induced tissue injury. So there is no such thing as safe tan.

The highly protective Canadian and European sunblocks with Mexoryl are the best protection against sunburn as they have excellent UVA protection. LOreal Ombrelle or La Roche Posay Anthelios are good choices. I use that for long hours in the sun. You can order these from Canadian online pharmacies like Feelbest.com. About the same price as US sunblocks.

UVB= burning rays
UVA= aging rays

In the USA, the Neutrogena Sunblocks with "Helioplex" are most protective sunblocks as they have photostable UVA protection. Look for the Spf 55, that is the most protective. The SPF 45 and 30 are also good. They also have the cooling mist formulations.

For cheap protection the coppertone spf 50 is good stuff, but make sure the drug label says 7% octocrylene and 3% avobenzone. 7 bucks for 8 oz at Target.

Also it is important to wear a spf 15 or better everyday as most sun damage occurs not at the beach, but everday running errands and driving in the car.
Cetaphil spf 15 is a great choice daily protection for good UVB, but also quite good UVA protection.

Listen, we all want to look good @ 40 macking the 20 something females. Trust me age lines won't help you. just my 2 cents

Do not be too easy. If you are too easy to get, she will not want you. If you are too easy to keep, she will lose interest in you. If you are too easy to control, she will not respect you.

hi road demon. My problem now is only that my nose looks red whereas my face looks a bit better. i do not feel much pain at all now compared to 5 days ago. It just looks red. Is the cortaid really going to help the redness go away? i am using aloe vera gel and it is working everywhere except the nose. i dont have to worry about the sun anymore because i have been staying in for a week already.

Hi warror1,

the cortaid should help reduce the redness. More time too. good to hear the your are saying out the sun while it heals.

I would still recommend a daily block like cetaphil spf 15 for the face not only while it heals but everyday. cetaphil 15 is a very light moisturizer, does not really cause breakouts, and does not feel greasy.

Mate you should get out more. I get sunburns every year when the weather is fine for going to picnics and grills. Chicks love trips in the nature with boys. The thing that I love about grills is making the food on the fire and drinking beer. The more chicks you take the less you pay for your beer, because they drink just a few and I drink the rest :) but everyone pays the same amount.

Just leave it alone and live your life. Don't stay at home because of the redness, don't let it stop you.

I feel like I have to say this again: go to the beach as often as possible! The hell with computers and TVs

Sunburn is the visable endpoint of damage. It is not a good thing!

If it is still red, then it is still repairing itself and is MUCH MORE sensitive to further damage. I'm not suggesting staying indoor, but do make sure you cover up with dark colored clothing, and/or use high spf sunblock like a 50+ when you do go out.

When you are you young, your body is more robust and can repair itself better. Sun damage is cumulative. The best endpoint is signs of aging like wrinkles and fine lines, while the worst is skin cancers like deadly melanoma.

Yes, I agree go out and enjoy the great outdoors, just be sensible and apply some good quality sunblock spf 30 everytime you step out the door, reapply it every 2 hours in intense sunlight, and avoid the direct sun from 10-4 etc.

If you are 20 and you burn you will recover, but at 40 the mistakes of youth catch up with you. Trust me. Do you want 1inch circles cut out of your face or neck to removes skin cancer lesions, because you were carefree about protection?

Trust the Scientist here.

It doesn't matter how good-looking you are, how romantic you are, how funny you are... or anything else. If she doesn't have something INVESTED in you and the relationship, preferably quite a LOT invested, she'll dump you, without even the slightest hesitation, as soon as someone a little more "interesting" comes along.
