I was researching this today actually .. how strange.

They do have health benefits, but there haven't been any studies done on them.

Steam rooms can cause your heart rate to rise up to 30% while inside.

They can speed up muscle recovery.

All your blood is brought to your skin(to cool, its the body's heat control method), and increases overall blood flow. Essentially it is good for your skin.

It also cleans your skin of toxins and bacteria.

It can actually help remove exterior fat. The blood is brough to the surface of the skin and into fat stores. If you're on a diet or fat loss program, sometimes you can't get rid of fat in certain areas because blood simply does not flow there. If blood can't flow to the fat deposits, your body can't utilize the cellulite. So by bringing more blood to the surface of your body, more blood is accessing the surface fat deposits.

Sauna's won't do anything on their own, but if you are an athlete or bodybuilder, steam rooms are excellent because they speed up muscle recovery.

-------

I didn't mention it, but apparently there's also some mental benefit. Something about the relaxation and "feeling of wellbeing". It has the same soothing effect that a hot bath has...very relaxing.

I've started using them--today actually, that's why i was researching it today--and I bring my ipod in a plastic bag(to prevent moisture and heat) and listen to some calming music after workouts. I haven't used it long enough yet(1 day, lol) to notice any effects, but I'll post them if I do.

Also, have a cold shower afterwards. It feels nice and closes the pores.

The longer the better I suppose....

Though I don't like to be in one for more than 20 minutes to half an hour... I start getting dehydrated.

Google it

I use to sit in there after workouts for about 20-30 minutes at my old gym where they had a sauna. I think it's cool.

Saunas are actually very good for your health and skin

other than that steam rooms can be potentially dangerous to your health because the steam may contain fluoride which is known to create long term side effects for the body.

10 minutes of showering in hot tap water / or breathing in fluoride steam is equal to drinking 1 gallon of polluted water.

I'm very happy not chewing on cancer/blindness gum and not showering in adverse affect water.

God Bless You

Steam rooms definetly help muscular fatigue. At the steam room I use it says aim for 6-12 minutes and then go and take a cold shower or go for a quick swim. Then repeat the cycle as many times as is comfortable. Also take a drink of water in with you to replenish the water that is being lost.

Intermittent hyperthermia enhances skeletal muscle regrowth and attenuates oxidative damage following reloading.Selsby JT, Rother S, Tsuda S, Pracash O, Quindry JC, Dodd SL.
Applied Physiology and Kinesiology, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, United States.

Skeletal muscle reloading following disuse is characterized by profound oxidative damage. This study tested the hypothesis that intermittent hyperthermia during reloading attenuates oxidative damage and augments skeletal muscle regrowth following immobilization. Forty animals were randomly divided into four groups: Control (Con), Immobilized (Im), Reloaded (RC), and Reloaded and heated (RH). All groups but Con were immobilized for seven days. Animals in the RC and RH groups were then reloaded for seven days with (RH) or without (RC) hyperthermia (41-41.5 degrees C for 30 min on alternating days) during reloading. Heating resulted in ~25% elevation in HSP expression (p<0.05) and an approximate 30% greater soleus regrowth (p<0.05) in RH when compared to RC. Further, oxidant damage was lower in the RH group when compared to RC as nitrotyrosine and HNE was returned to near baseline when heating was combined with reloading. Reduced oxidant damage was independent of antioxidant enzymes (MnSOD, CuZnSOD, Cat, GPX, GRX). In summary, these data suggest that intermittent hyperthermia during reloading attenuates oxidative stress and improves the rate of skeletal muscle regrowth during reloading after immobilization. Key words: oxidant stress, heat shock protein, antioxidant, oxidative stress, hypertrophy.
