I have learned a lot in the field of home building and would love to start a company. I make a pretty good living and would love to start a small business to help reduce the large amount of taxes that i pay.

My question is, can anyone start an incorporated contracting business? I live in Ohio and have had a hard time finding information about becoming a licensed contractor to build homes.

My main objective, is to build a house and live in it, until i sell it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A corporation is easily obtained by filing the correct paperwork with the Secretary of State of the state in which you incorporate. You will still have to provide personal guarantees when you borrow money and open accounts, but the corporation keeps you from getting sued personally for liability arising from your business. Even if you never make a mistake, someone could wander into your job site, hurt themself, and sue. If you have a valid corp, then they can't get your house, car, or personal assets.
