I'm having problems with this. I do them well, but I want to go lower.

Like, I'm doing something of a box squat, but I want to go lower... push myself and make it harder.

How can my friend spot me to ensure I get help if I need it?

He just needs to make sure that if you get stuck, he puts his forearms under your armpits, and gives you a little bit of assistance. He shouldn't pull you up, but just give you enough "push" that you can get the weight up.

I was starting to wonder how one does spot for squats... i wasnt using a spotter before and ive been trying to get someone to do it for me now that my weight is getting decently high but my friend will be like "how am i even supposed to help" and i dont know what for sure to tell him.

That is how you spot for squats...

"For those who are spotting someone else on squats, the spotter should watch closely throughout the performance of the lift. The spotter should stand behind the lifter as close as possible without interfering with him/her. The spotter’s hands should be kept below the chest (male) or under the arms (female). The spotter should be in position to lift the lifter up and backwards as need be. The spotter should squat with the person. In this way, the spotter’s legs will be bent so they can be used if the lifter needs assistance."

Also, here is a picture of what it should look like.
