I'm not into ice hockey, but I can see the appeal of the sport. Guys on skates knocking each other on their ass trying to get a puck into a net. Plus the occassional fight. Like I said, not my cup of tea, but I can understand the appeal of the sport. The same holds true for golf and NASCAR. Not my things, but I can see the appeal of the sport.

However, I can't for the life of me see, nor understand the appeal of soccer. I can understand how a 8, 9, or a 10 year would find running around and kicking a ball fun and entertaining, but how the world finds this entertaining is beyond me.

What is compelling about grown men running around kicking a ball in a low scoring game and how did this become the world's most popular sport? It would be different if soccer was high scoring game, I would understand the interest, BUT THERE'S NOTHING GOING ON!!!!! Hell there are even that many attempts to score.

SO if somebody would be so kind. Please explain the appeal of soccer.

I agree with you. I´m from Germany and a lot of people are soccer fans here. I personally hate watching soccer. Furthermore I think soccer is so popular because the atmosphere when you watch it live in a stadium is seriously incredible. It is really boring to watch it in front of the tv unless your favorite team is playing. Unfortunately the ironic thing is it is more like a slave trade. You hardly see any Germans playing in the German league. The good teams just buy all the players from all over the world, so that German players are just bench warmers. Another point to mention is that soccer is actually a lot of fun to play. You should try it

If the majority of the world enjoys football (soccer), surely there's no explanation needed.

I don't like watching any sports. It just bores the hell out of me. Like last night, the Super Bowl was on and I don't even know who was in it. I'd rather go do something myself than sit on the couch watching other people do something.

I love hockey. I think soccers neat but hockey's really the better form of the sport, although soccer's been around for so long.

As for soccer, I'm an american, what can I say, I'm not a fan of soccer. (nor basketball so I'm not quite average)

Not necessarily. In the UK we have a show called 'Match Of The Day' which shows highlights from the weekend's games, and it's a very poopular show. Personally I'm quite happy to watch teams I don't support play (I'm a Rangers supporter incidentally ;))
well uk soccer is boring. the fans have no passion. the games are similar to american sporting events. the uk got rid of all the interesting fans and now you boys are left with a game that is as bland and dull as the girls in the uk. sad to say the least. singing and chanting just doesn't do it for me. you gotta have flares, racist banners, scary looking dudes, and riot police.

only reason i have ever attended a sporting event is to witness the mayhem that might erupt at any moment. otherwise, sports are best viewed at home on your hdtv.

one police dude dead others injured this weekend in italy. ah, the joys of watching games through the haze of tear gas and flares.

keep this in mind next time you watch those crazy college kids (code word for gay) at a lame american college basketball game. few girls show up at the games. funny, because there are some amazing serbian girls out there. in american colleges the girls are pigs, yet they insist on going to games.

soccer is the greatest game ever...at first i hated it...but then i started playing it and i began appreciating the skill and technique involved...u dont even realise the skill guys like zidane and ronaldinho have in order to do what they do with a football(soccerball in yur case) in a game...learn to play the game first...and trust me..then u will begin to appreciate it!

I played soccer, and american football, and rugby.

All are great sports... as for watching them, well, it's a matter of knowing what's going on on the field.

To the untrained eye (or the eye that has not participated), any of these sports looks like utter confusion.

If you don't know soccer, you won't know about positioning, about playing the offsides well, about ball-control versus agressive strategy. It'll make the game pretty boring to watch.

Americans are also prone to needing a lot of scoring in their sports. Not sure why this is... why is a 30-20 NFL game more "exciting" than a 1-0 soccer game?

Soccer is awesome! The skill in some of the top leagues, the Premiership and La Liga are incredible! There are so many elements of skill its simply breathtaking, especially watching some of the guys who are great on the ball and have such immaculate control! Ronaldinho, Rosicky, Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan, Eto'o, Henry, Messi, these guys are electrafying!

For you nonsoccer fans, appreciating soccer is like appreciating the drive downfield in american football. Except the possesion and build up is what makes the game, not the touch down at the end.

Soccer is the most beautiful sport in my opinion. Im glad I grew up playing it and hope my kids do the same. Very entertaining also. I was born in America but raised outside of it, and just because America does not appreciate the sport does not mean much for the sport. It is the leading sport in the majority of countries around the world. Soccer has been around forever and since America doesnt like it, who cares? In fact, maybe that means it will never become overly commercialized like many mainstream sports in US of A.

Watching the likes of Henry nowadays is poetry in motion. Or Alan Shearer back when he was a prolific goal scorer.

The thing that pisses me off is the influx of diving nowadays. Even back in my hometown, with like 60,000 people, the diving and tempers flaring on the pitch detracts from the overall quality of the game. Also there is no loyalty amongst players or management anymore. I was a football fanatic back in the day and i could tell you the line ups and bench of the top 15 teams in Seria A, Spanish football, EPL, Dutch, Bundesliga (aite maybe not bundesliga) and a couple brazillian squads. Now i took a break and came back and everyone is on loan, or signing to a different team, or renegociating for more money.

sparky0000 that post was so stupid i wont even address it.

I love soccer. World Cup is the best. No ads. No timeouts. The crowds are into it more than any other sport. Its not the worlds most watched sport for nothing. Look how boring american NFL is w/ all the timeouts, half time shows & 2 minute warnings....its just one big bore....1 hour of playing time takes 3 hours...what a joke....

Oh soccer is beyond boring, as is baseball. However, it's a sport. My rule is, if I can't do it, and do it well, I don't talk sh*t on it. I guess there is some physical contact when you're "fighting" for the ball. Little bursts of sprinting and kicking, the occasional headbutt...

i used to think watching the NFL football games sucked because there was a whistle every second. it just wasn't fast enough for me. then i rented the videogame madden and i learned how much stragedy was involved getting a touchdown. i can't believe how many years i missed out on such a great sport. it's awesome how a videogame can actually make you interested in a sport that you thought sucked.

baseball and soccer actually suck though.

I reported your post to the Moderators. I'm sorry but you are the biggest loser that ever posted on this site. A whole nation cries for the death of a hero and you say that this is what's beautiful about soccer. STFU and go to Rotten's forum, fàggot.

Soccer (FOOTBALL) is the best sport in the world. It's the most popular, and frankly, it's ****ing excellent. Fast paced, ridiculously high level of skill involved, and just free flowing action really.
Plus you have the electrifying atmosphere when you go. I go to see my team every week and there's always (well except recently - due to prices, **** performances) 48,000 there, singing their hearts out.

It's been said the American culture towards sports is different than ours... and from what I've seen of them online/and in my coupla holidays there, I agree. To us it's not a game, it's a way of life. Everyone knows the teams in the league, everyone knows the rumours, etc. Everyone has a favourite club and most people own the shirt...

Football's ****ing mint.
