I have to admit it: I do not find (much) pleasure in the path I've chosen to build a career on.
And I haven't even started! (I'm just out of college)

I want to do something else in this life, but I have no idea what I'd truly like, nor I'd know how to make the transition if I found out.

For now, I HAVE to continue on this path as to profit from the years I've spent learning and to get some real world experience, but at some point I'd like to change it.

Thoughts?

What are you currently in and what do you want to do in general?

Automation, but the chances for a job in this field are slim, since they are all asking for work experience. I'm not longing for a job in automation, either.
So I'll most probably be in software development (aka "computer nerd") for the next ~2 years; SW dev is something that I could live without.

What do I want to do in general? No freakin' idea!
Something not technical.

Edit: something not technical, something where you can interact with people, something which sets you up to meet new people (both on the job and off the job), something where you can be creative

Confusing, eh?
I am confused. :)

i switch majors from nursing, to chemistry, and ended up in business.

In business i studied business law which virtually leads to nowhere unless you want to go to law school. I managed to scrounge up some experience in finance and now i'm working in M&A.

I also have an interest in archaeology and recently applied for a few digs. I just got accepted today. I am still contemplating a career in archaeology which will be dependent on the outcome of this upcoming dig in july.

I always wanted to visit my roots and i just got approval to work from my companys Asia HQ in hong kong.

some people spend their whole lives trying to figure out what they want to do. Do every little thing that you can while you can and you may possible find your true passion. Don't be one of those people who don't know what to do and just keep doing the same old thing everyday and end up regretting the way they spent their life.

This way if you still don't find out what you want to pursue as your career, it won't matter too much because you've pretty much done everything else besides it. Get a job, work and make money.

Let everything else fall into place (you obviously have to be proactive as well).

well the good news is your are young enough for a "career" change without it being a big deal. The key will be landing the first job with the experience you want to get, which is sort of a catch 22 since you don't know what the future will hold. Given you want more social interaction, sales and marketing or some sort might be up your ally. Read up on what people have had to say and try to get an entry level job, if you can. The competition is fierce right now, so without any internship experience you'll be going up against some pretty smart kids.

I'm a CCRN (critical care registered nurse) w/ degrees in molecular bio and nursing. Overall, compared to my mol. bio, my nursing degree was kind of a joke. I totally baked for most of my degree and would skip all my optional classes, and just show up for the exams. I think I could have taught the pathophysiology and pharmacology classes. Nursing education up here, even in one of the top rated MD/doctoral universities in the country, is a bit of a joke. Its a lot of fluff and you don't really learn anything in class. All the learning happens as you gain clinical experience through your placements. Going through our critical care training program, people were saying how they learned more in those 6-7 weeks than they did in their 4 years of nursing education... tells you how much crappy the education actually is.

Good things about nursing (especially if you're in a regular track 4-year B.S.N program) is the amount of hot 18-21 year olds in your program. As a guy in the field of nursing you also have an instant advantage. Most guys will end up working in the more technically demanding areas like critical care or ER. Up here you can easily make >100 k as an RN. So the money is pretty good. The work in critical care is also really cool and can be very intense. Not sure if you've ever been part of a code team, or worked an active resuscitation on something like an arterial GI bleed, but man, its a great feeling when you have a good outcome.

My goal for the next part of my career is to be a CRNA (certified registered nurse anesthetist). My education and experience in critical care is basically setting me up for this. Overall, I think this is among the best health careers, as you get a fantastic balance of clinical autonomy, responsibility as well salary and learning opportunities. If you pick up call/extra shifts you can easily make 150-200k as a CRNA. Just check out www.gaswork.com

Sorry for the thread hijack.
